Poor tolerance of the occasional punter
2
Having been here a couple of times given that the place was conveniently located between a place I was staying and a few of my mate's residences I don't really feel like I'm missing out now I'm not stationed so close by.

First impressions would be of a decently run pub with more than it's fair share of facilities. All the staples are there: sports screens, pool tables, fruities along with a well stocked bar and outdoor seating areas.

I have to say though that I never really liked going here and would strongly recommend checking out The Rathmore up the road before going anywhere near here. The staff and locals never really seemed that tolerant of unfamiliar punters and at busy times staff would appear to deliberately serve regulars before us. It also has one of those landlords who appears to sit at the bar drinking more often than actually working but it's not for me to criticise work ethic here. We were also on one occasion we were told that they were not serving food but were then far more accommodating to a group of regulars walked in later. No good reason was given for this and we were made to feel like idiots for querying this.

My impression of this place is one of the few public houses left today that can still thrive on it's local customer base. If it's the case that in order to keep this business you need to treat anyone else who goes into the pub like a second class citizen then fair play. I certainly won't be returning in a hurry though.

Recently refurbished Hungry Horse
3
Back when I was at University trips to the Hungry Horse used to be reserved for a couple of German students I was aquainted with. From approximately Friday evening onwards they would starve themselves before going up 'Das Hörse' mid afternoon on a Sunday to order 'Der Löt'. On the few occations I joined them I don't think I got through a quarter of the portion I was given and although this still represented good value, as a moderate earter, the sheer magnitude of the meals intimidated me somewhat.

I have to say, nothing has changed. Just reading the description of the katsu curry and it's relative proportions was enough to make me just order the chicken wings starter with a small side of onion rings. My collegues were a bit braver with one of them tackling the Bombay Bad Boy Burger (a burger served with naan bread and curry sauce) and the other tackling the epic Tower Burger.

The car park is reasonably large, although does look like it could fill up on busier days. The place has also recently had a makeover and has some rather amusing booths with flat screens in them that are worth checking out just for the novelty value. As long as you don't mind the portion sizes in terms of quality the food is what you would expect and it does hit the spot.

For the price you pay (just under £10 for a pint of something and a huge portion of food) I would say this represents very good value and the service wasn't too bad, although the place was not particularly busy when we went and it does have the air of an establishment that might struggle on busier days. Anyone who's experienced the Hat and Feathers or The Rock in Cambridge on a day when there is more than one person in there will know what I mean.

Sadly, the Tower Burger proved unmanageable and despite giving it his best shot my collegue spent most of the afternoon sitting at his desk feeling ill. However, this may have something to do with the pint of Aspalls he washed it down with.

Good traditional pub with a warm feel
4
This very traditionally furnished English pub warmed my heart when we first walked in with it's broad selection of traditional ales and token local alcohlic at the bar perstering the barmaids. The carpets even retain a faint (unoffensive) stale cigarette smell which must date back some years now.

The atmosphere would suggest that this place served up some really good home cooked food but sadly the burger I had was well below par and the lasagne my collegue had was best describe as 'your typical frozen'. I do hear that the gammon, pineapple and chips can hold it's own though so if I ever return this is what I will be ordering.

Service was very friendly and the food did come quickly despite it being a busy Friday lunch time. The big car park out the back made access easy and there is a conservatory and terrace for the few nice days we get here.

In short, bar the food this is an excellent joint and would be the perfect place to go for a couple of ales after work, especially considering you are right on the border of Adnams terratory here.

Not as expensive as it looks

I popped in here for a trim as the barbers in Henley pretty much always ruin my hair! The staff were warm and friendly without being too overpowering. The girl that cut my hair was one of the junior stylists and she did a very good job. Reasonably priced for a well named salon. Recommended!

Onkar Indian Restaurant

The only curry house in Oundle and perhaps a little complacent about this. The service was fine and we were seated fairly quickly on what looked like a relatively busy evening. Menus were stuck together and the drinks they served (a coke and a lemonade) were flat.

Poppadoms were lovely the standard selection of chutneys. The currys were not so good, rubbery meat and pretty tasteless. Not the worst curry I have had but certainly not the best.

Very reasonably priced but I wouldn't eat there again.

great for beginners!

My brother and I took my girlfriend and his fiancé here as we are off skiing in the spring and we needed to get the girls up to speed on the basics. We did the three hour beginner session on the Friday night. Excellent teaching and an all round good atmosphere. They have a bar and balcony that looks out onto the slopes and it is surprisingly spacious inside. If you are a more advanced skier you may get a little bored with the lack of variety but I would definitely recommend this over a dry ski slope!

Henry's Cafe Bar
London | Speciality Restaurants
Typically West End

Don't expect anything but the usual when you frequent this cafe bar in London's West End. Busier nights will line the bar with the usual array of single suits waving their twenty pound notes around like they are going out of fashion and demonstrating how not to score with any vaguely attractive girl who is unfortunately enough to find herself more than 5 meters from the group she is with.

If you can put up with the typical central London clientele then you won't do too badly here. Reasonably price (for the West End I should add) the selection of wine and other drinks is hardly inspiring but at least serves most tastes and the food is very very good even if it is served up in a rather pretentious manner.

Staff for the most part appear attentive and professional and will normally do their best to serve you well.

We have a book store and a blockbuster in Henley so I'm wondering where W H Smith fits the market. This small branch does not have a lot to offer and after not being able to find the book i wanted on two ocassions I would not recommend. Childrens stationary is the only thing that seems to be in abundance!
