Restaurant and Hotel
2
This is a restaurant and hotel. Situated in a country lane not far from Penarth.Recently extended and now has a large glass conservatory added to further the room size. Suitable for weddings and Christenings. A family run place.Unfortunately they are not open at lunchtime for food. There is large childrens play area, also a nice seating area in good sized grounds. I went here for a Christening and the food was good and varied but quite basic. Sunday lunches are popular and advisable to book a table. I have stayed here and the chalets are at the back of the hotel. They are sparsely furnished and the loft window has no blind so one wakes very early, and in the summer time it is difficult to get much sleep. The rooms are not terribly clean. The breakfast is served back at the hotel. On two occasions that we stayed we had to actually wait for them to open the door to get in ( not early about 8.30am!) and the food was poor.

Excellent Food

This pub and restaurant is situated right on the road to Bridgend and opposite a pond. A good sized car park. The pub is very well known and people travel quite far to eat there. The bar area is small and cozy. Slightly cramped tables and chairs. The restaurant area is nearer the side and is light and airy. The staff are all very friendly and extremely helpful - when asked if there was any chance of just a plate of mash for a toddler it came with a smile and not problem at all. The menu is varied and very filling portions. Some good plain home cooking type menu. I had lasagne which was excellent. Good desserts as well. The prices are reasonable but not cheap. You are not rushed and they are good with noisy children !!

Good Family Restaurant

This is a really good place to take even very little ones - highchair provided. A very nice setting right by the sea, and a good size car park. The Captain's Wife can become extremely busy at main mealtimes. The outside has a lovely big slide for children to play on and good seating area to eat on warm days. Inside is very open and airy and flows from area to area. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. A really large selection of food. We had childrens menus as well and they were served a good portion, not too big to put them off. Desserts were plentiful as well. I had the spaghetti bolognese which was very good and one of the party had a prawn salad which was a huge portion and all very fresh with a really good salad. They have soup of the day and it comes with a really good big fresh home made looking piece of bread. No rush to have to finish and leave the table. Also they provide a little bag for children to colour etc. to keep them amused. Highly recommend all parents and grandparents go here.

Restaurant/Pub/Hotel

This hotel has a large bar area which is popular with locals. The restaurant is a reasonable size with a good menu. There is another area near the back with long tables and benches suitable for a drink or lunch. Outside is a small area of tables and chairs but it is right next to the car park.Highchairs are available and the menu is suitable for even young children. the staff are very friendly and helpful even if you want a particular meal altered slightly. the price is very good and plenty of food on the plate. the fresh crab sandwiches in the summer are extremely good one of the best I have had. They also serve coffee, teas etc from mid morning. The cafetiere is extremely good coffee and very reasonably priced - a regular for this family !!! In fact we regularly go there with friends and grandchildren. Highly recommend the place. The place could probably do with a bit of a make over inside but the food and coffee make up for it !!

French Food

Newly opened this summer.Outside good tables and chairs metal and comfortable with some sun umbrellas. The views are not particularly good as it is mainly a car park around the area and odd glimpses of the water. The inside is large high ceiling and spacious. The staff are not good and in fact brought the wrong order and we had to wait ages for the correct food to be served. The place is pretentious and extremely expensive. They serve all day and evening. Certainly not somewhere you would want to take young children. The snails which were meant to be one of the dishes of the day were sold out when we got there just after 1.30pm. There was a long wait for the order to arrive and the portions were not very large for the price being asked. The drinks were also very highly priced and the coffee was awful. Certainly not a place we would go to again unless it changed massively.

Chinese /Fish & Chips

Nice clean light place. Reasonable menu of chinese food which is excellent all reasonably priced and piping hot. Usual Fish and chip type menu as well. Possible to phone and order for collection unfortunately no home delivery. They really need to think of home delivery as many people like that for this type of food. Staff seem friendly and service is quick and prompt on collection. Their Chicken Chop Suey is yummy. Ordered once for a large gathering and everyone felt that the Chinese food was extremely good. No desserts really on offer. The chips are good but the fish is not particularly brilliant. The children were not keen on the chicken nuggets. It's a popular place late at night after an evening in the local pubs. Parking is extremely difficult and probably puts a lot of people off as on the main road which is narrow.

Fresh Food

This cafe is very small but good spaced seating light and airy. Very child friendly with toys and highchairs .The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Lovely atmosphere and very popular with all ages. The food is cooked on the premises in the kitchen just behind the counter. There are a good selection of biscuits and cakes, tarts and gluten free products. The menu has some very interesting sandwiches and soups. The food is quite pricey and could put some people off. It is possible to take away some of the biscuits and cakes on offer. The chocolate brownies are extremely good - very moist, but small !! In summer there is one table and few chairs outside but it is right on the pavement which is busy.

If you Love Fish this is a place to try

This is a quaint small restaurant pub. They serve really good fish meals and very fresh too. The fishcakes are HUGE and all homemade. the portions are huge as well, but the price is steep too. The desserts are alright but very expensive for what you get. The place is extremely popular and busy, and it is possible that quite often some of the menu is not available if you go too late. There is often quite a long wait for the food to arrive as well. The restaurant inside is small and cozy. the bar area is very small. Outside across the road ( which is quiet and narrow) is a beer type garden nice benching seats and great views right by the estuary to watch the boats go by. In the summer evenings there is a good atmosphere and patio heaters to keep you warm. The bar staff are not particularly friendly and sometimes it takes ages to order either a drink or the food. This is not a place suitable for taking little ones never seen any highchairs and no childrens meals to choose from only smaller portions of fancy foods.

Poor Decor Good Food
3
This is a place that you have to eat you are not able to just buy a drink. The atmosphere is totally lacking and the decor looks dowdy and dull. The seating is handy for young children as they have long benches to keep them sat still ! They do have highchairs as well, which is good for very young ones. The carvery is quite good they serve a child portion for a slightly cheaper price, but the price is quite high considering that the roast is very average. The desserts are good if you like ice cream with some extra bits quite a good selection but pricey really for what you get. The staff are helpful and courteous. It is a popular place for the elderly and Sundays get very busy sometimes. It desperately could do with a new makeover to brighten it up. The menu other than carvery is good and varied with very large portions. Certainly a place I have been on many occasions and would frequent.

Restaurant and Pub

The Lighter has a good atmosphere. Lots of seating and very cosy inside. There is a tiered seating area with good views over the estuary. In Summer and better weather there are loads of wooden benches and tables with good views again. The food is served all day even including Sunday. They serve coffee and a very wide menu. I have been with children and adults and there is plenty to satisfy anyone. the meals are very large portions and reasonably priced. I do think the desserts are rather pricey and not particularly good size. Inside is quite often packed out and a table can be difficult to get, but it is possible to reserve a table. Good atmosphere lots of talking and very friendly staff. Bar area is good and the place is clean. AN extremely busy and popular place. The food is fresh and the home made burger is excellent and filling !!
