I contacted Sheffield TV Repairs and spoke to a gentleman called Kevin to explain the problem I had with my combined DVD/VHS player/recorder. Kevin was really helpful and he fully explained the nominal cost he charged to assess the unit to see if it could be repaired and, if so, what the cost would be and also how long it would take to fix it. He called me after a few days to let me know that the issue had be diagnosed and pinpointed to the ROM drive and what the cost would be to do so. This allowed me to decide if it was economically viable to repair it, which it wasn't, so I have now purchased a refurbished unit to allow us to play both DVD's and VHS tapes. Kevin duly returned the unit to be and I gave him not only the nominal amount he charges but a few pounds on top, as his honesty has saved me spending my money unnecessarily.
