On average, roofers charge between £30 and £50 per hour. For larger projects, roofers might charge a daily rate, typically ranging from £180 to £350 per day. Roofing costs vary based on location, professional experience, and the complexity of the job.

Small roofing repairs are often quoted hourly, while anything structural tends to be priced as a job. Fitting roof windows or building out dormer windows sits at the higher end, since both involve opening up the roof itself.

However, rates may increase further still for more specialised tasks, such as working with particular materials or complex roof structures. It’s always best to get multiple quotes to make sure you receive competitive pricing and good value for money for your specific roofing needs.

Most roofers in the UK offer free estimates allowing you to compare costs before committing to any work.

When getting an estimate, ask whether that figure is a fixed price or if it changes once work starts.

Payment plans are less common. Some roofers offer them on more expensive projects (like complete roof installations or significant repairs) which spreads the cost over several months. It's worth discussing payment plants directly with your roofer first before committing to any work.

Roofers in the UK do not need a formal licence to operate. However, certain types of roofing work such as working with electrical systems may require certifications.

Look for these instead:

• An NVQ or SVQ in roofing • A competency accreditation such as RoofCERT • Membership of the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) or the Confederation of Roofing Contractors (CORC) • Registration with the NFRC Roofing Competent Person Scheme

A roofer who belongs to one or several of these schemes is more likely to be a legitimate business worth your consideration.

Yes, many UK roofing services guarantee their work, usually covering workmanship and materials for a specified period.

Guarantees often run from 5 to 20 years, depending on the scope of the project. The type and length vary between businesses, so clarify what is included before any work starts.

Ensure these guarantees are in writing to protect you during the job and after it is completed. Our guide on roofing services explains more about what roofers offer.
