PAT testing refers to the checking of portable electrical appliances (like kettles and computers), while an electrical inspection focuses on fixed wiring and the overall electrical installation.

Many local electricians offer both services; you don’t have to choose between them! If you’re interested in both services, some electricians might be willing to offer a discounted package.

An electrical inspection includes checking the safety and compliance of wiring, sockets, switches, and distribution boards. The process is fairly set between electricians, and will almost certainly involve fixed electrical wiring testing and visual checks for potential hazards.

The final result of this electrical safety test is an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). This is not an electrical test certificate, but a thorough breakdown of the state of your property’s electrics, including current or potential issues and how they should be addressed.

For homeowners, an electrical safety inspection is recommended every 10 years. For rented properties, landlords are typically required to conduct inspections every 5 years or at each change of tenancy.

When it comes to PAT testing, electrical test certificates don’t have an expiration date, but experts recommend you complete PAT testing every 12 months. As always, it’s your responsibility to ensure you’re creating a safe electrical environment.
