La Femme Decor Property Maintenance
St. Austell | Property Maintenance
Good, professional and friendly service

I had a complicated job of plastering and decorating for a property sale. La Femme Decor wasn't the cheapest quote but they did an excellent job, good attention to detail, looked after the house, and dealt with extra problems that arose in the course of the work, and so provided excellent value for money.

The Funky Budda is a lively but small bar tucked away in a corner of student-land Cathays. If you’re in the area it’s well worth visiting for a pre-meal drink, or you could always eat here. There’s only a small menu, but from what I’ve tasted it’s well prepared and presented, plus you get a huge portion. The food, and especially the drinks, are very pricey. The latter are all imported lager such as Nastro Azzuro (excuse my spelling) and cost about £4 a pint, so order halves if you want to avoid a heart attack. Good music adds to the laid-back atmosphere, and although it gets a bit noisy it’s possible to hold a two-way conversation without shouting.

Very funny

The usual Ha! Ha! affair. Lots of people love it, some hate it, others are indifferent. I lie somewhere between these categories. The music is too loud, the drink too expensive, the food is alright, and the furniture quite comfy. The one in Cardiff is at the top of town, near the Hilton and on a sunny day (or should that be ‘the’ sunny day) it’s a nice place to sit outside with friends, drinking £12 a pop pinot grigio. I’d check out the website before you go, they usually have an offer on if you sign up to their e-newsletter, which makes it resemble good value for money.

I’d heard of this place from some friends of mine, so I decided to give it a try. The first surprise to me was that, unlike in continental Europe, where these places are highly visible public loos, here in Blighty you can buy something resembling food in them. So, a couple of nights ago I called up to make a reservation for two, but apparently they’re not so busy-you can just turn up and be served. Off we went then, but alas, no waitress sat us down. The specials of the day are printed on a large illuminated screen at the front of the restaurant, but failing to take our orders we upped and left. Never again! Can be found by dint of the big yellow arches, prices are reasonable enough but I can’t comment on the standard of the fare. Good luck getting served!

Clwb Ifor Bach

Clwb ifor bach (pronounced as far as I am concerned: club eye four back) is another bastion of Welsh nationalism. Most people call it The Welsh Club, but I don’t think this is the correct translation. Legend has it that the bouncers would only let you in if you could answer them in Welsh. Well now all decedents of the Tower of Babel are welcome, although I should qualify ‘welcome.’ The management seems to have a policy of making a big queue form outside on club nights to make it seem more popular, you’ll freeze outside for an hour and then it’ll be empty inside: one-in, one-out indeed! Well when you do get in they’ll be three floors for your dancing delectations. The middle is my fave, cosy and quiet enough to throw some quality moves!

Lying in the beating heart (or churning gut) of Cathays is the Pen & Wig. If you’re a student in Cardiff, you’ll have got drunk here. If you’re a prospective student, maybe you should do some work before you stumble into (and eventually out of) this pub. If you just happen to visiting Cardiff and are neither past, present or future student, you might prefer the more classy bar opposite. Not that you’ll have much of a choice, as the outside of the Pen & Wig is invariably packed and the inside...well don’t even go there...literally. Cheap drinks, raucous atmosphere, terrible food sums it up well enought.

Ah, the Barfly. Underground-literally and stinking of well, maybe the smoking ban had its downsides. The Barfly should be such a great venue, and in some ways it is. I’ve seen some cracking bands here over the past couple of years, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, stands out as one sensational night, squeezed up against the tiny stage, the lead singer a mere flick of sweat away (all in my direction), superb. On a bad night however, you’ll be stood behind one of the huge pillars, totally disconnected from the music and waiting for it all to be over. Plus this year the current line-up is abysmal-a bunch of Welsh emo-miserabalists and other unheard-ofs. Let’s hope it improves soon.

The Chapter Arts Centre, or Chapter as it is called here, lies in Canton to the West of Cardiff. It’s undergoing a major renovation at the moment so it’s not the lovely place it used to be, but the bar, cafe, cinemas and shop remain open – perhaps the theatre too, but I haven’t seen it with my own eyes. The bar is a noisy affair, even now that it has been moved into temporary accommodation it still resembles, visually and aurally, a school canteen, and sells an overpriced selection of beers, lagers, wine etc. The cinema is the main attraction for me, cheap if you book in advance on the website and showing ‘fringe’ films.
