cold!
1
I went to Nottingham with work fairly recently and this is where our company paid for us to eat. It is the coldest restaurant i have ever been in! I'm not sure if it is because they have tried to go minimal with the bare brick walls or because it is really quite big inside but i spent the whole time shivering. To add to it, the service did nothing to warm me up either. Come dessert the waitress abruptly announced 'no lemon cheescake, no chocolate fudge cake' this was before we had made our choices. The food itself was quite nice and the same as what you would expect from any other Pizza Express. Unless you want to eat with your coat on i wouldn't bother.

Nightingale Club

brilliant night

I often make the trek over from Coventry to come here, it is a brilliant night out. So many gay bars and clubs manage to feel seedy but Nightingales rises above that and just provides a genuinely fun night with something for everyone. I really agree with the other two reviews that the atmosphere is nothing but friendly and you never see any trouble. The first floor you come to has all your cheesey chart-toppers and is brilliant. This place is huge and never feels claustrophobic, sweaty or cramped. £5 to get in on a Saturday (i have only ever been on a weekend so can't comment on any other nights). Gay or straight you will be welcomed here!

Inn The Park

A gorgeous place hidden in St James' Park. We went here for a drink and a cake and it was really nice. We sat outside from where there is a gorgeous view of the water. Drinks were quite expensive, cakes not so bad, but you are paying for the location. I had an exotic sounding sparkling elderflower drink and a caramel shortbread which were both delicious. Not far from Buckingham Palace if you fancy a walk through the park it is well worth a visit. One thing stopping it from getting 5 stars were the toilets! Three were out of order, the others were wet on the floor and I decided against using them!

Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen

I stayed in the Hoxton hotel and saw something i had never seen before: a restaurant and bar within a hotel which were actually popular! I stayed on a Saturday night and this place was more packed than most of the local bars! The food is supposed to be excellent, I did not eat here however. The drinks were bog standard London prices. There was a heavy door presence, most likely because of the hotel guests coming in and out. This seems to be a cool place to go in this area. Full of trendies and the rich student type you so often find in London it wouldnt be hard to feel you were sticking out like a sore thumb if you had just tramped down from your hotel room for something from the reception shop though!

The Hoxton

The Hoxton hotel was recently voted number 2 in a list of the best hotels in the UK by Guardian readers. It is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. I was lucky enough to obtain one of the 1 pound rooms (standard stay is from about 109 per night for a double). There were fantastic perks including a free pret a manger breakfast left on a hook outside your door on a morning to a reasonably priced small 'shop' located in reception downstairs (in opposed to ridiculously high priced mini-bar prices - the only thing in your fridge in your room is free water and milk - fantastic). The room itself was quirky and original with an immaculate stylish bathroom. Location wise it was close to the tube station and a short hop skip and jump to Brick Lane for a curry. Fantastic location, wonderful hotel.

Queer

Great gay bar on canal street. I have eaten here a few times during the day and never been disappointed. Duck and plum sauce wrap was an absolute winner. Alcohol is reasonably priced for the street, moderately priced, you are up north afterall! I have been there with straight friends so they do seem to be straight friendly, not likely to see hen parties and the like in here though, if you're going to go leave any hang-ups at the door and go (to) Queer! It loses one star for the slight bleach smell it can sometimes have, but hey, at least its clean.

The Saxon Mill

Saxon Mill

The Saxon Mill is set off the main road in a gorgeous area with a lake alongside it and outside seating. The bar area is really nice, fairly posh and they sell good beers. The Saxon Mill restaurant is similarly nice in terms of décor. When I went I was unfortunate enough to have a sub-standard meal. I ordered the lemon and salmon pasta dish and I must say, was quite overwhelmed by the taste of lemon. I complained to the manager about this, on doing so, I was asked if I would like a coffee or something else and I said no I just wanted it to be taken away. I was surprised to say the least when it appeared on the (extortionate bill) I went back to the manager and he took it off. The Saxon Mill sells over-priced pub grub which thinks it is so much more. Saying that, the people I went with thoroughly enjoyed their meal. Just avoid the lemon and salmon pasta!

Inspire Cafe-Bar

As the name so cunningly suggests this fantastic bar is inside an old church. How good it is doesn’t stop with the interior, which is, in itself, really impressive. They have an absolutely huge range of beers from everywhere. It’s not cheap but then you won’t find this kind of place every day of the week, particularly not in Coventry! The music is laid back (the kind of stuff you wouldn’t really know, and aren’t meant to know), the clientele are young and trendy but not too young and trendy. No townies in sight I am happy to report. Genuinely unique bar, well worth a visit.

Browns Independent Bar

When I first went here I assumed it was part of the Browns bar / restaurant chain. At first I was disappointed when I realised that this was not the case, then, however I was pleased. There are huge comfy sofas in this huge nicely turned out bar. It is where the young professionals turn out in droves for their weekend drinks and it’s popular for a reason. Whilst being large and airy it maintains (unlike the ultra posh Browns I was expecting and thought I wanted to go to) a friendly atmosphere and, major bonus, it sells Strawberry brothers cider – a true rarity!

Turmeric Gold Restaurant

This has got to be the nicest Indian restaurant in the Midlands – and, indeed, it has the awards on the wall to prove it! Situated on Spon Street this place really is a treat for the senses. If there are two of you, book in advance and sit on the special seating area upstairs where it’s shoes off and legs crossed where you eat in a intimate booth luxuriously decorated with cushions and sweeping velvet curtains. I had the Green Chicken Korma (Chicken Korma with coriander) which came with rice and the stuffed pepper to start, both were delicious and with 2 beers the bill was around 50 pounds for two, more than reasonable for a truly memorable dining experience
