Baroosh

I had a very nice meal out with my parents and husband in Baroosh. We went in and sat down, and one of the staff came over and said (in a very apologetic way) that we couldn't stay as it was an over 21s bar. Since me and my husband are 24, we were actually rather flattered by this! Just be careful that you bring ID with you when you visit.

The menu is varied and interesting, including things like mussels. I chose to have a sharer plate with my husband, and we also ordered a bowl of wedges to go with it. As yummy as the wedges were, we shouldn't have ordered them - the sharer plate is MASSIVE. The flat bread hung off the plate on both sides, and was thick, fluffy and delicious. The dips were really interesting too - feta cheese and olive dip, beetroot houmous, spicy dips, creamy dips, sun-dried tomatoes and hot peppers.

The decoration inside is nice, but in need of a bit of touching up - it's starting to feel a little bit tired.

I recommend Baroosh - just don't forget your ID, and make sure you're hungry.

Bettys

Yes, it's ridiculously expensive. If you just want a quick cup of coffee, there are many other coffee shops in York that will sort you out. However, if you want a long, leisurely cup of tea with the traditional sandwiches (crusts cut off, of course) and cakes, then Bettys is the place for you! I went for afternoon tea with a large group of friends, and it was the perfect place. We put on our pretty dresses, and very much enjoyed the whole experience. The food was wonderful - I had open-topped sandwiches that had considerably more filling than bread, the scones were fresh and came with plenty of jam and clotted cream, and delicious cakes which included a really yummy raspberry tart. We sat upstairs which was really light and airy, and we didn't feel like we were in a goldfish bowl at all. Someone was playing the piano at the end of the room, it took us a little while before we realised that they were playing Disney songs and songs from musicals! It made us smile, and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Slug and Lettuce

I visited the Slug and Lettuce twice over the weekend, once for cocktails and once for breakfast. My first visit was on a Saturday afternoon, and our group decided to take advantage of their 2 for 1 cocktails offer. The pub was extremely busy and there was a very long queue at the bar, but the staff were calm, friendly and efficient, so we weren't waiting for too long. The cocktails offer applies to jugs too, and our group very much appreciated getting two jugs of Pimms for the price of one!

Our second visit was the next morning, for breakfast. The pub was nearly empty, and the staff were very helpful, and didn't mind at all when we started moving tables around so we could seat our very large group. The food came quickly, and was hot and delicious. My breakfast included the biggest potato wedge I had ever seen!

My only issue really is that the pub itself feels rather unloved. Sticky tables and floors, and there were floral displays that looked like pots of brown lettuce. It was rather off-putting! The pub needs a little TLC.

Akbar's gets very, very busy on a Saturday night. We had a booking, and were left waiting around for half an hour before we were even shown to our table. The resturant itself was very dark, and very loud. We found it quite difficult to chat to each other, and resorted to almost shouting in the end. This also meant that it wasn't easy to tell the waiters what we wanted - it was very difficult for one of my friends to explain that she had a nut allergy and wanted the nuts removed from her dish, for example.

Once the food arrived, it was delicious. I highly recommend the family nan bread - it comes on it's own stand, and was very tasty. I had a mushroom and paneer balti, which was lovely. The sauce was quite spicy and was hotter than I would normally eat, but it was balanced out by the creamy paneer.

I would go back, but not on a Friday or Saturday night.

GBK

I visited Gourmet Burger Kitchen with a large group of friends. I arrived late, and asked if our group of friends (who had made a booking under one of their names) had arrived yet. The staff seemed completely bewildered and left a couple of us waiting around while they attempted to find out. We gave up and phoned our friends, who were already sitting upstairs!! No idea why the staff didn't know that...

After all that, things were a lot smoother! Our drinks were delivered quickly, and the food was absolutely delicious. I had the butternut squash salad, and was pleased to see that they had been very generous with the feta cheese - the pieces were massive. Normally I find GBK quite pricey, but with discount vouchers it's much better (they have vouchers on their website for you to print out, which is nice and easy). Definitely recommend for the food, things may be less confusing if you visit in smaller groups.

This restaurant is absolutely beautiful - the building is stunning. I went there with a large group of friends, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food is good value for money, it was very filling and we all enjoyed what we ordered. My only issue really is that the menu is rather limited for vegetarians - there are a couple of options, but they are rather uninspiring. The goats cheese and mushroom calzone is absolutely wonderful, but I end up having it every time I visit an ASK because the other options are so boring... The puddings help to make up for it though.

Aroma Restaurants

I very much enjoyed my visit to Aroma. The staff were friendly and very efficient - you use a different plate each time you return to the buffet, and the plates were often whisked away without anyone at my table noticing! The trays of food were clearly labelled, which makes it nice and easy for people with dietary requirements or allergies.

The selection of food was excellent - there was plenty of choice for both meat-eaters and vegetarians. The restaurant was very clean and tidy, and the staff looked very smart.

My favourite part though has got to be the puddings - lots of fresh fruit, jelly, profiteroles and a chocolate fountain.

The only slight downside is that the drinks are rather pricey, but everyone in my party felt that they got their money's worth out of the food, so it was fine.

Will definitely be returning!

This was the latest in my tour of Wagamama restaurants around the country! I went on a Saturday night about 9pm, and was very surprised to see that it was pretty much empty inside. I was expecting it to be much busier. Still, was definitely good news for me, as it meant I got my food quicker!

The service was great, very quick and efficient. My food came quickly, and was hot, tasty and flavoursome. No complaints at all! I haven't had a bad time at a Wagamama yet, and this one was just as good as my other visits around the country.

The price really is excellent - I always have the (free!) green tea, which meant that my entire meal cost about £7.50. I only had a main - I was far too full to even consider a pudding. Definitely one to consider if you're on a budget.

Sandwiches as big as my head :)

Love this place - cannot recommend it enough!! I was visiting Norwich for the day, and was in need of tea and a spot of lunch. I was pleased to find out that it was a vegetarian cafe - I very much enjoyed the novelty of being able to eat everything on the menu. I chose a hummous, avocado and salad sandwich, which was as big as my head. It was delicious, and had probably more filling than bread, which I think is always a good thing in a sandwich. The guy who was working there was extremely friendly and helpful, and didn't seem to mind when we borrowed something from their extensive board game collection and settled ourselves in for the afternoon. It was a lovely cosy place - perfect for meeting friends for a chat, sitting quietly with a book, or playing board games with a group of friends. Everything was reasonably priced (In the end we got six cups of tea, three massive sandwiches and a very large piece of cake for £17, which was much cheaper than the chain coffee shops), and I will definitely be returning when I'm next in the area.

Highly recommend this pub! I went there with a large group of friends (there were 13 of us), and everything was lovely. The person answering the phone was friendly and helpful when we booked, and even offered to put decorations up when she heard it was a birthday party. My friends recommend the guest ale they have on at the moment - I think it's called Puffing Billy, but I'm not sure. They had a decent selection of vegetarian dishes, and the oatcakes with leeks and mushrooms were delicious. We didn't have pudding because the portions were very generous, but I definitely intend to return and try them out.
