When it comes to tackling a home renovation or repair project, finding the right tradesperson can be a daunting task. With so many options, it can be hard to put your faith in a stranger and welcome them into your home. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and unsure on the best practices to get the right tradesperson for you.

Yell has partnered with TrustMark, the only UK Government Endorsed Quality Scheme for work carried out in and around the home. Since they started in 2005, they have been working closely with the Government and industry to raise standards of work and improve the protection offered to homeowners. From electricians to plumbers, carpenters to HVAC technicians, there are many types of tradespeople to choose from. In this blog, we'll provide valuable insights and practical advice on what to look for when searching for a good tradesperson, from checking licenses and certifications to evaluating their communication skills and work ethic.

What You Should Do When Looking for a Tradesperson.

When researching and exploring your options, whether that be for a kitchen renovation, loft extension or getting cavity wall insulation, be sure to set out a clear, detailed description of what you want, need and your budget.

We would always advise getting at least three quotes. This gives you something to compare against and make an informed decision. Don't just select the cheapest.  Consider how you feel about the tradesperson and the way you have been treated so far; do you want them in your house?  Can you work with them and communicate with them well? How is their previous quality of work and attention to detail?

Don’t be afraid to ask the tradesperson how long the process could take and what the process will involve. This will give you a greater understanding of your home renovation project and the tradesperson should be able to reassure you that they’re an expert.

4 key tips to follow:

  1. If the tradesperson must pay some upfront costs for materials, it’s ok for them to ask you for some money upfront to cover some of these costs.

  2. Always get a written contract. Contract templates can be found in our Consumer and Business Portals and have been issued through our Trading Standard Assured Advice Service.

  3. Agree in writing – email is fine - on any changes that happen along the way so you have a record of what was said at the time. Seek references, read reviews, speak to previous customers and if possible, visit previous jobs. Research the company and check their website.

  4. Only pay for work that has been completed unless you are using a payment service that protects your money. For example, our Payment Protection service which releases funds to the business at stages of the work.

How Do I Know if a Tradesperson Is Trustworthy?

TrustMark work closely with Scheme Providers and Registered Businesses to advance and improve the standard of works carried out in and around the home and help to promote these accredited tradespeople to homeowners.

By becoming TrustMark Registered, businesses can demonstrate their ongoing commitment to customer service, high standards and continual improvement.

To become a TrustMark Registered Business, that business must be registered with one (or more) of our Scheme Providers, listed here.

If a business is TrustMark Registered, they are working to a code of practice set down by an approved Scheme Provider. TrustMark Registered Businesses are thoroughly checked, vetted and monitored to make sure they meet standards in technical competence, customer service and trading practices, so homeowners can be sure they’re making the right choice.

A Registered Business's trading record and financial position are checked when they first join us, however, such checks cannot guarantee a business will not have financial difficulties. For this reason, we insist all Registered Businesses provide a warranty that provides increased protection if the firm goes out of business.

TrustMark Registered Businesses are checked and monitored against recognised British, international or industry standards. We ensure you receive a good standard of workmanship and that any complaint will be treated fairly, if you are unhappy with the service you have received from a TrustMark Registered Business.
