What is tai chi?

Tai Chi is a non-competitive martial art known for its many health benefits, physically and mentally. It is sometimes called Shadow-boxing and is practised for self-defence, meditation and body upkeep as well as body toning. Tai Chi uses slow, meditative and rhythmic body movements that are designed specifically for inner calmness and peace. Tai Chi originated in China and dates back thousands of years. Today it is practised all over the world.

Tai Chi is known to be very good for relieving stress, relaxing the muscles and flexibility. Other benefits of tai chi include:

What to wear for tai chi lessons?

You can wear almost anything to Tai Chi lessons, as long as you are comfortable and can move your body freely. Wear loose, light clothing that is flexible. Bottoms should be airy and loose so you can bend, move and stretch with ease. Footwear should be light, with a thin sole and a broad base to help you balance. Avoid jewellery, accessories and perfume.

Can you lose weight doing tai chi?

It is possible to lose weight and maintain it if Tai Chi is practised regularly, that is at least 5 times a week. You will probably not notice a difference in weight immediately as results from Tai Chi are gradual, yet steady.

How much do tai chi classes cost?

The cost of Tai Chi classes varies in cities across the UK but most will charge between £35 and £55 . The cost will depend on whether it is a group class or individual session; whether the instructor has many years of experience and the level of Tai Chi you would like to learn as well.

The best way to learn and practice Tai Chi is with an instructor. There are plenty of tutorials online but to avoid injuring yourself go to a professional for guidance. How often should you do tai chi?

You can practice Tai Chi as often as every single day, or at least 4 to 5 times a week, to get the most benefit from this martial art. Most classes with an instructor range from 20 minutes up to an hour but once you learn the basics, you can practice on your own for 10 minutes a day at home. Many practitioners of Tai Chi prefer to meet outdoors in a park to practice in the fresh air.
