What cars do driving instructors use?

Driving instructors tend to use either a hatchback, saloon or estate. Driving instructors' cars are typically small, compact vehicles such as a Ford Fiesta, Mini, Vauxhall Corsa, Skoda Fabia or Peugeot 108. The vehicle must be in good working order, roadworthy and with a current MOT. Driving instructors cannot use a convertible.

How much do driving schools charge?

Driving schools charge around £25 to £30 per hour . The cost of driving lessons varies depending on the specific driving school and where you live. The price may also vary depending on whether you block book your lessons in advance. Some driving schools will offer a discount if you block book a certain number of lessons. On average, learner drivers need around 45 hours of driving lessons with a driving instructor and an additional 22 hours of driving practice before taking their driving test.

Do driving instructors have dual control?

Most driving instructors have dual control, but not all. While most driving instructors have dual controls in their cars, it is not mandatory to have them fitted. Learner drivers should check whether the driving instructor's car has dual control before booking lessons.

Do driving schools pick you up?

Yes, driving school instructors will pick you. Your driving school instructor will pick you up and drop you off at a pre-agreed location. This could be your home, school or workplace.

Can I switch driving schools?

Yes, you can switch driving schools. If you are not happy with your driving school, you can change to a different driving school. You will need to check the terms and conditions of the driving school regarding their cancellation and refund policy. Many driving schools require at least 48 hours’ notice of cancellation.

Can you change driving instructors?

Yes, you can change driving instructors. You can choose to change your driving instructor for any reason. If you are learning with a driving school, you can ask to change to one of their other instructors. Alternatively, you will need to find yourself a new driving instructor. Check the driving instructor's terms and conditions regarding their cancellation and refund policy.

Can you have two driving instructors?

Yes, you can have 2 driving instructors. Nothing is stopping you from learning to drive with 2 different driving instructors. However, it may get confusing, especially if you have only just started learning to drive. Different instructors usually have their preferred teaching methods. You may benefit more from increasing the number of lessons you have a week with just 1 driving instructor.

Do you tip driving instructors?

Tipping driving instructors is entirely up to your discretion. Learner drivers are in no way obligated to tip their driving instructor or give them a gift. However, some learner drivers choose to give their driving instructor a small gift or ‘thank you’ card after passing their driving test. Some driving instructors who are part of a driving school may not be allowed to accept tips or gifts from their learner drivers. It is a good idea to check first with the driving school.
