The Oak

If you visit this pub at the weekend make sure you are not thirsty as you will be waiting for anywhere up to 30 minutes to get served!!!! the locals are not friendly, so also make sure you travel with friends, the staff are quite often very short with you and have no desire at all to engage in conversation, i have eaten in this pub a few times and the food is OK for what you pay, however the cold atmosphere greatly lets it down, if you just want to get drunk and act like an idiot you may find this pub nice but i would say you would be better of going to the dukes head up the road as the drinks are cheaper and the queues are much shorter!!

Busy town pub

With not many options for eating in Stowmarket we thought we'd give The Oak a try, the food was nice, laid out well and reasonably priced, unfortuately we were the only ones eating! It was a Monday night, and also between 5pm and 6pm (we had our daughter with us and were told that children were only allowed in until 6pm). I'm not sure if they serve food on a Friday or Saturday night, but it wouldn't be a confortable place to eat on those nights as it gets really busy, maybe early evening would be ok. I'd definitely try it again, as the food was tasty, and it is convenient to us, but wish children were allowed a little later. It would also be nice to know how many people eat in there at other times of the week/day.

Pretty Average

Owned by Greene King, this pub is a large pub seating probably 200 people in total including the beer garden at rear. The said garden is 3/4 covered by a big umbrella with electric heaters meaning it is usually full at the weekends. The pub does serve food although it is not known for its selection which is very basic pub food including burgers and chips. A meal tends to cost around £8.
Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest but the pub is never empty due to its location. From memory i think there are 2 or 3 ale pumps with the rest larger. greene King is always sold and there is usually a guest ale from an ale house from the UK.

Usually best to avoid Thursday nights as they are band night and tend to be extremely loud.

The Oak is situated in Stowmarket’s town centre and is probably the town’s busiest pub. It attracts a diverse clientele but seems particularly popular with younger people. There is plenty of seating both within the pub and also in its large beer garden. The drink selection is good and prices are fairly reasonable. The pub also does food, however having never sampled it I cannot comment on the standard.

Friday and Saturday nights as you would expect are the busiest nights, with the pub staying open late. Thursdays can also be a busy night with a live band on most weeks, usually local cover bands. Whilst there is also a quiz on most Monday nights.

It is also a great place to watch sports, particularly football. There are several screens and the pub subscribes to both Setanta and Sky. It is certainly the best place to watch football in the town and there is usually a good atmosphere particularly for big games.
