Small portions long wait

1
Waited a while for what seemed to be a kids portion. Poor lighting outside too on tables so food in the dark had to use my phone to see what I was doing

Georgey Porgey Pudding and Cry

3
Another pub I've visited for years, it's pretty much my local.

Unfortunately, in my opinion, it has got worse over the years. Not because the pub is bad, but because successive refurbishments, seemingly every year, have served to try and take the pub further and further upmarket.

the upshot of this is that you'll pay nearly £4 for a pint of Kronenbourg/Stella, which seems to be how the refurbs are paid for, plus the food menu has got progressively fancier and more expensive over the years.

The menu reads like something from a classy restaurant, though the prices are pitched to match. Very difficult to get anything more than a snack for a tenner and anything decent like a nice steak or a lamb shank will set you back £15-20.

While I still love this pub, with its friendly staff, nice surroundings and excellent beer garden/verandah looking over the river, it has priced many regulars away from the premises.

Never anytyhing but extremely busy, expect a long wait at the bar and dont be hopeful of a drinking seat after 7 or 8. Plenty of seating in the restaurant area and outside though, not so good in midwinter or if you're in for a pint though.

If you want to treat your partner to a nice meal in attractive surroundings, you cant really go wrong here, but for a couple of quiet drinks with your mates, there's better options locally.

not so good for vegetarians

1
The dish descriptions are mouth-watering but the quantities served are incredibly tiny. I have eaten a vegetarian main course twice and both time had such a ridiculously small portion served than I nearly as hungry after as before. Last month I had the grilled aubergine & mash, it was tasty but consisted of only 2 or 3 slices of aubergine and one scoop of mash. And yesterday I had the cheese, cauliflower & onion pie with salad and roasted vegetables. This consisted of a small dish of cheesy sauce in which I could only find one tiny cauliflower floret with a very thin pastry topping (like filo), the roasted vegetables turned out to be two dices of butternut squash and two pieces of red onion, the salad was green leaves without any dressing and with 3 pieces of pepper, and two more kinds of onion. It mostly was bland - all I could taste was all the onions (until the next day too). Paying £8 for a main course like these was not only disappointing but made me angry. Having tried twice, once at lunch, once at dinner, I can only assume the chef/manager there thinks vegetarians are anorexic! Why else would they not supply a normal amount of nourishment? A few potatoes or a bit of pasta doesn't cost much money and is easy to provide. The pie is a joke - I was expecting a hearty meal.
The friends eating with me had much better quantities provided. The fish & chips was OK, though not as big as in most pubs (such as the Griffin in Caversham which is our regular and is excellent for both quality and quantity). The pub classics appear to come with decent amounts of potato, sauce etc. The lamb was a huge plate with mash & gravy.
I shall not be returning there,a t least not for a meal. I would stick to the snack menu which is served until 6pm as I am sure any toastie or jacket potato would fill me up more than an £8 well described meal.

Nice place

4
Chef and Brewer pubs are springing up all over the place and this is one of the best.

Next to the river with a lovely decked beer garden area the George is great for relaxing over a nice lunch with friends.

the menu contains all the usual pub food - burgers and eveything available with chips but its reasonably priced, good value and served quick.

Next to te A329 and the M4 the george is easily accessible from anywhere.
