I volunteered to work in Sue Ryder while I am searching for a new job. I found that the assistant manageress was well stressed most of the time and really in my opinion should not be in this position. Rather than delegating jobs to us she got into a frenzy and kept telling everybody how very busy she was. This ranting continued even when a customer came in to the shop. At one stage her mother had come into the shop and purchased some pictures which were in fact for her daughter who was helping out on the till. When the assistant manager intervened to sort out the staff credit she went into a panic while as volunteers were in the shop sorting out the bric and brac, and also customers were still coming in the shop she held her head and said she could not cope with this and ran into the back pushing past a customer. The customers were stunned and did not know what was happening. When I offered to help she refused any intervention. The next time I came in to volunteer nobody spoke to me. She gave me the job of counting the pieces in the puzzles to check. I was sitting in the back doing this when she came into the back with one of the volunteers who has learning difficulties. She is a very pleasant bubbly girl but obviously the assistant manageress had issues with her. I was totally appalled at the way she was laying into the poor girl and going on at her that when she came in the following monday she must adhere to what she expected of her and she was not here to talk. Well how she could expect this poor girl to remember all this in the next week I do not know. She asked her to smile and be happy but the manageress said she had not got time for that. I was feeling very hurt that she could behave in this manner and when I went in to try to talk to her she told me that all the volunteers had an issue with me and she told me that she had phoned the job centre. I put it to her that maybe it was her own attitude that was the reason for her volunteers leaving but she insisted it was me. I did not go back any more but feel somebody should investigate her methods.
