Nice Place

Looking forward to this place opening again, Never had a bad experience here before and if any honest concern was always corrected. Polite staff - two very good polite easy going auctioneers, first half the pro, the second half the joyful under-study now becoming a natural - two fine ladies behind the reception counter. So when I read any concerns some might or may have had about Southgate Auction I can only presume it is due to an absentee blind bid and not viewing or enquiring about an item beforehand by phone, whereby staff have always have been happy to help? Hope Covid passes us by, always look forward to Friday evening online to view the lots hopefully see if a few items that catch my interest!

Worth a look

I love walking round to look at things on Saturday morning----masks must be worn and a do not touch policy at the moment----helps protect you. When I moved to the area, I got a few really good things---and helpful delivery service at a small cost. YES 20% commission + vat is a lot and when you sell you only know you will only get so much. My mothers gladstone wild crocodile bag that she paid £300 got £35.00 after commission, but as long as you are not bothered what you get and surplus to your requirements , they go ahead and place into auction. There does seem like a lot of people use this place for house clearance--lots of boxes of mixed things, so if you are one for car boot sales-then worth taking a look.

Go to a different auction house

Absolutely terrible very poor customer service. I wanted to put in to auction 10 Royal Doulton plates but they were not interested and practically said it wouldn't make them any money.

Since I got them cheap I wanted to take the gamble and put them into auction but they didn't even bother to have a look at them.

Instead they told me to take them to a boot sale.

I have seen plenty of TV shows where items get put into auction regardless of their value.

Southgate auctions is a very expensive place to go if you want to purchase as the minimum bid is £20.

Unless you are selling a diamond ring or Rolex watch I wouldn't touch Southgate auctions with a barge pole.

It's entertaining and fun, and you might end up with a good buy!

I find this place very good. It's a trade auction so you need to be on your mettle - this is no problem if you view the lots beforehand and watch the proceedings to get a feel for the bidding. They are helpful with deliveries and collections if you want them, you just need to factor in the costs beforehand to make sure you understand what you are likely to get or have to pay out. I enjoy going there and their on line catalogue is good so you can suss out what's on offer before you go there. It's a good experience providing you go with the right attitude: some days you'll end up with a brilliant buy, other days you won't, end of.

Beware

Avoid at all costs, if you wish not to lose your money. Experts at misrepresentation of lot descriptions, and never give refunds when they are clearly in the wrong.
I was forced to take them to court, which is ongoing.
