Business overview

Exams or just for fun

After studying at Huddersfield university and gaining a degree in music (BA(hons)) as well as a teaching diploma (LTCL) I began teaching in my own home. 25 years later I have had the pleasure of teaching students from age 7 to 79!

School age children come during the early evening but adults have the option of coming during the day if that is easier for them.

My teaching is based on the traditional concept of learning to play from written music which is a good background for playing all different types of music. There are many reasons for wanting to learn a musical instrument. Whatever your aims, just for fun or achieving a grade, you will find playing an instrument an absorbing and fulfilling activity.

In addition to teaching the flute, piano and music theory I am actively involved in local music-making including an orchestra, quintet, flute choir as well as other chamber music ensembles.

Level of teaching offered:

Flute: beginner to grade 8

Piano: beginner to grade 5

Theory: beginner to grade 5

Fantastic teacher!,

I have been learning piano with Sonia for about four years. The lessons are fun and interesting because we do a mix of theory and practical including duets. I have learned so much with Sonya as my teacher and have improved a lot. She is a kind, patient and experienced teacher and has helped me to continue to be enthusiastic and to want to learn more.,

Review for Sonya by Bekah

I started having piano lessons with Sonya at grade 2 level and she has brought me on so much! She uses a range of exciting and engaging techniques to help develop not only my playing, but also my sight reading which was something I struggled with particularly, using a range of techniques such as duets to help me to improve this vital skill. I also had lessons up to grade 5 theory with Sonya which was a pleasurable and rewarding experience, as theory was not something I had done before. Her teaching methods really helped my confidence. I strongly recommend Sonya as she has helped me so much and is a great teacher, as I have achieved distinctions in all of my ABRSM exams due to her.
