I had been looking for a long time for a craftsman with traditional skills, qualities and values when I found Rupert McBain Studio.
The lid of a treasured old family bureau was damaged, having broken from its hinges, and age had taken its toll.
I am delighted with the result. The restored bureau is now in pride of place in my living room, with lid, runners and lock restored, missing beading replaced, the lock cleaned and a new key provided, the non-original handles replaced (to be right for the age of the piece) and the bureau cleaned throughout and wax polished. Rupert guided and advised on every detail from his extensive knowledge.
I have already used him again to restore a small antique box, that was grease-encrusted from use as a toolbox, and with a deep crack in the wood. Again, I am delighted with the work- the woodwork cleaned, the crack restored, brasswork gently cleaned, and the wood resealed and wax polished.
Craftsmen of this quality are extremely hard to find.

Following a disastrous “restoration” of a classic early 60’s sideboard and table by a poorly qualified restorer, we took our furniture to Rupert McBain who carefully and painstakingly stripped off the previous applications that had been used and restored the patina and lustre of the wood to its original finish.

We were thrilled with the result which exceeded our expectations. Mr McBain and his staff are master craftsmen who care about what they do and carry out their work to the highest standards.

Since then Mr McBain has restored other items of furniture for us with the same degree of expertise and I would therefore offer the highest recommendation for his work.

Rupert drew up and made an American Oak dining room table for us: seats 8, with a removable top (as requested). An extraordinarily striking design and a beautiful result - it has produced many compliments.
