A Very Bad Experience - AVOID

1
I bought lamb chops from this butcher and also a frozen ½ kg bag of fillet steak tails. I only live in Barnes and pretty much took them straight home with me. When I went to cook the Barnsley chops 48 hours later they were, unfortunately, rank. I defrosted the fillet steak several weeks later over a period of 24 hours in the fridge. Again, they smelt rotten and I had to throw them away. I have been shopping in butchers for over 30 years and my father ran a croft in Scotland so I know about meat. With Seal's, my local butcher in Barnes having closed following his retirement, I had hoped that R Chubb and Son would become my new 'local' butcher. Unfortunately not - AVOID.

Bad Meat. Avoid this butcher.

Went in thinking that I could support local business and that the meat would be better than the supermarket.
The man sounded knowledgeable, but sold me bacon after I asked for air dried pork or pancetta. Not a huge upset, but annoying none the less.

Bought calves liver, ground beef and bacon.

I thought that there was something wrong with the calves liver, but ate it anyways to some stomach discomfort the night of purchase.

The ground beef was rancid one day after purchase and the bacon isn't the healthiest colour. Threw it all away after one day.

I would be willing to forgive bad liver, as demand isn't that high and turnover is slow, but to not be able to sell in date ground chuck or bacon is a joke.

Probably my own fault for not looking at the meat before buying, and I know that it isn't the easiest to stay afloat, but I feel robbed and deceived. Hence the review(I don't often review)

I will not be returning.
Go to HG Walter in Barons Court for really good meat.

There are sellers of meat and then there are butchers. proper butchers, who know and love their trade.
R. Chubb & Sons, run by the superb David Emms, is very definitely in the latter category, a true professional who is as knowledgeable about good cooking tips as he is about the excellent quality meat cuts he lovingly prepares.
Shops - and staff - like this are a rarity and we should treasure them by supporting their excellent offering.
And when you go there, do look up at the ceiling to see the wonderful propeller-like fan which has been there since the Great Exhibition where it was bought in 1851!

Wonderful traditional butcher

We buy all our family's meat from here and have no plans to change that. They do really nice big joints of beef. If you want beef for stewing they will cut it up in to the right size pieces for you. They also sell cheese.

You can park right outside for up to an hour - a rarity in London!

AWESOME butcher. Go there now.

This is a really great proper butcher.

When you cook their bacon it does not leach out a load of water like the bacon of certain supermarkets. Same with the sausages.

They have homemade pies too.

If you are really lucky on a Saturday they will have some homemade sausages left for you.
