Chiropodist or Podiatrist - who should I see?

This is a frequently asked question and the answer is they are both the same. “Chiropodist” is a more traditional title and is the term used by most practitioners who have been qualified the longest time and “Podiatrist” is the title that has been adopted by the profession to modernise its image.

The title chiropodist or podiatrist is now protected, ensuring that only practitioners who have completed a three-year training course and are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council can use these titles. You should be aware of the full range of services offered by your chiropodist podiatrist as these will vary from one practitioner to another. Some will be qualified to administer local anaesthetic for removal of whole or sections of toenails and some can inject steroids. A few are able to prescribe certain medicines and others specialise in gait analysis.
