Business Overview

Authentic Cantonese and Sichuan Cuisine

In the early 60s, Joe Wong signed a business opportunity to open an unlicensed restaurant in Churchgate above two retail shops. Seven years later he acquired the present premises at Bedford Square and obtained a licence for the Hong Kong Fountain Restaurant. With 100 covers; a raised platform with an electronic organ for dancing; crescent shaped seating in the alcoves with circular tables; excellent cuisine and service; Hong Kong Fountain was the most popular night spot in the town.

When Joe retired the lease passed to the Chan brothers, assuming the eponymous title, Mr Chan's Restaurant. Eventually the lease passed to big brother Ming and his wife Irene, who are the restaurant's current owners.

Mr Chans
We decided to order a take away from Mr Chans Restaurant which is situated in Bedford Square in Loughborough. We were certainly disappointed and frankly disgusted with the ruddeness and arrogance of the staff who served us. The actual food was average and nothing to write home about. You can get better quality takeaway at your average chinese restaurant at much better prices. The egg fried rice and prawns that we ordered were not the best we've ever had and the spare ribs were over cooked and far too dry. Considering they are supposed to be one of the better chinese establishments I think they should pull their socks up and up their game as there are lots of other chinese takeaways to choose from and I certainly won't be giving this place a second chance.

Mr Chans
When entering the place it was bigger than it looked from the outside. The place was fairly nice, with chinese decorations to make it feel authentic although when it was also fairly dark at times ecspecially when going up the stairs it did feel quite gloomy.
When ordering the food the staff were friendly although when we asked what a certain food was they were not so brilliant at explaining.
The food arrived after a decent amount of time and my Black bean duck was quite good but my friends sweet and sour chicken was not, but i guess you win some and you lose some.
At the end the price was reasonable.
Overall the place is fairly good however it could do with a bit of jazzing up, ecspecially with so many chinese places popping up, it really could do with something to make it stand out.
