Following the collapse in 2015 of Tullis Russell Papermakers in Glenrothes, I was given the opportunity to study an SVQ Level 3 in Domestic Natural Gas Installation and Maintenance at Fife College, and qualified in mid 2016. Focusing on the principles of central heating system design, legal compliance and electrical fault finding, the course was designed to develop the next generation of professional Installation, Service and Repair Engineers for an increasingly demanding market. In todays world, we are dealing with more environmental and efficiency legislation; increasingly complex and expensive appliances which require ever more electrical and mechanical knowledge to repair when the worst happens; and a huge variety of ever fancier controls to install to make our central heating work at its best.
