Prepare for the greed here....,Prepare for the Greed.

Charged three times more for meds than available elsewhere, then refused to provide prescription to obtain elsewhere unless a further consultation, a fifth, was paid for. Prepare for this if you choose to use this practise.,The greed is astounding. RUDE!

We brought our baby tortoise here and deeply regretted it as soon as we was in the room. The vet was extremely rude and belittling just guess diagnosed our tortoise. Please spare yourself the stress and total waste of time money and petrol. This vet has no compassion for your pet or the owner we felt extremely disappointed of our treatment here and cancelled our follow up appointment and got a second opinion which turns out we totally wasted our money with this "vet". there is no excuse for he's rude vile behaviour if we wasn't so concerned for our tortoise we would of left. Every time we asked a question he would just repeat himself but slower absolutely no need to be like that with people. The receptionist could do with brushing up on her reception skills as well. All in all a very disappointing place to
Take your sick animal clearly by he's tone and guess diagnosis he's rudeness was to mask he's lack of knowledge.

Great vets

I must start with how annoyed I am with the 5 1star reviews that the SAME account has left.. If an animal is ill beyond recuperation it is not fair to let it live in pain.
I have 2 dogs at home and 2 dogs who are working and guard a yard that my family own, all 4 dogs go to Lawton's.
Firstly, they are great with aggressive dogs, so patient and have never turned us away no matter what the circumstances. This is why we decided that our pets should go to the same vets. Unfortunately we had to have one of our beloved working dogs put down last year due to an ongoing illness but Mrs Stoakes was so kind and let me stay with him while they carried out their procedure.
Also, only last month one of our pets had to have a lump removed from his chest area. Mr Lawton was very helpful and reassuring, he talked me through the operation and explained the recovery process. He was so knowledgeable and that really put me at ease.
To conclude, I couldn't praise this veterinary clinic enough!

Very good, compassionate and professional vet surgery

I have to totally disagree with the two previous reviewers. My cockatiel became really quite ill in December and I was hugely concerned about her. My previous vet had retired, but I had researched where the avian vets were in my area, so I knew about Lawton & Stoakes. I rang and got an appointment that same day (a Saturday). I found the staff on that visit and all subsequent visits to be professional, knowledgeable and kind, both to my cockatiel and to me. At one point my little bird had to have an overnight stay and it was fine - she was well looked after. She has now recovered and is back to her old self, which is wonderful to see.

It is always very sad when a beloved pet dies but it should not be assumed that it is the vet surgery's fault if it happens. If the animal or bird is ill anyway, the best care in the world may not be able to save it. My own experience with Lawton & Stoakes suggests that the care they provide is extremely good.

Only use these vets if you can predict when your pet will be ill ....

I described symptoms for my tortoise to the receptionist who said that the animal need to see a vet as soon as possible - then said that there were no appointments and to ring back on Tuesday!

Under the circumstances I suggested he might not make it through to Tuesday so would it be possible for an emergency appointment (they had almost an hour of surgery time till closing).

Without checking with the vets themselves, or other colleagues, she point-blank refused. Restated the fact that I did not have an appointment - well, of course, I mean sorry and all but I could not predict the animal would need urgent treatment on a Saturday!!!

I asked her if she could recommend anywhere else and again hit a brick wall. Apparently, she has no knowledge of any other vets who specialise in reptiles (tortoises). Neither did she have any information on their out-of-hours service. It was very much a 'go away and stop bothering me' call!!

I rang round other vets in the area and even though they did not specialise in tortoises they were extremely helpful and provided further contact details. In each case they said that if I was unsuccessful in tracking down a specialist I could revert to them and they would ensure I was seen by the vet on duty, and they also provided me with details of their out-of-hours services so that we could be sure our pet was seen.

They were disgusted and ashamed with the lack of help, compassion and understanding of Lawton & Stoakes.

Unfortunately, there is no happy ending. Our pet died that evening.

Still, at least our problems did not interfere with the Lawton & Stoakes receptionist being able to clock-off on-time. I sincerely hope that whenever that young lady finds herself in dire need of help she encounters an obtuse, belligerent, impatient individual just like herself.

I mean no disrespect to you and am sorry your tortoise died but just wanted to say that it seems unjust to leave such a harsh review when your tortoise was not even treated by Lawton & Stoakes. Unfortunately, if you rang an hour before closing time on a Saturday, it's quite possible that they already had appointments to care for other animals. Also, and I don't mean to hurt your feelings, but surely it would have been more practical to locate a suitable vet well before the little creature got ill, purely because most vets are not specialists. It seems to me that you did the wrong thing by your tortoise by not being better prepared. I know how hard it is when a pet dies, but you shouldn't blame the vet if it wasn't their fault.

This responder has completely missed the point - I do not expect vets to raise the dead or have miracle everlasting life-giving powers. And at no point in my review did I say 'Lawton & Stoakes killed my pet'. The review is about the service provided by them and is well-deserved by them. The valid and honest critique is about the dreadful service. I thought I had explained that! Especially by comparing the service provided by other vets. Lawton & Stoakes did have vets who knew about tortoises and had seen the tortoise previously when my daughter took it for a check when we first bought it - it was measured and weighed and the paperwork validated. Locate a suitable vet ... TICK! The review is entirely fair. I rang Lawton & Stoakes and spoke to the obtuse, belligerent, impatient receptionist. I then rang other vets, with the same problem and dealt with helpful concerned individuals who were trying their utmost to be as helpful as possible.
