Kemp Town Chippy

Very, very small portions. Overpriced. Poor quality. Rude service.
The positive reviews on here must have been written by the owner!

Went in (never been before) for chips at £2.10 & asked if they take cards -man said "yes" &then said "that's £2.60"
I said I thought it was £2.10? & he said "yes & 50p charge for cards"
I said no thank you & he got aggressive saying "it costs us 50p / transaction to use card machine!"
I said I have my own business & take cards & this is not true (pay monthly fee + % of overall sales)
He then said rudely "suit yourself" & I replied "lose a customer then"
I left & he yelled after me, then another man from behind counter - I assume the owner yelled "we're not a f*ing charity!"
I ignored them thinking to myself "and neither am I"
Under Covid I am grateful for any business I get. I don't know who they are to try & rip customers off adding 50p onto cards & then abuse them when they refuse & walk away (order wasn't even being prepared at this point)
I went down the street & found a friendly café that took my order by card & miraculously didn't add 50p to my order
Avoid this place

Such a massive shame they've been closed for over 2 months because of this lockdown and ruddy virus! But they're doing the responsible thing given their proximity to the hospital...
But I miss my favourite chippy in Brighton! I really hope they can stick it through and reopen soon because you will not find fresher fish, crispier batter and nicer chips at a chippy in Brighton and Hove than Kemp Town Chippy. Lovely food and great service - Brighton needs you back!

I don't usually bother writing reviews but i had to make it know on this occasion that the fish and chips from Kemp Town Chippy are the best I've ever had in Brighton. I've read the rubbish people have written on Google and it's simply not true - the chips have never been soggy or greasy or oily and neither has the fish (and batter), which is always fresh let me add.
Crispy golden fresh fish & chips - can't beat it.

They use fresh fish and it definitely shows! The fish and chips from here is very very tasty. However you will often have to wait for your fish to be cooked if it's not cod (only about 5 minutes though and of course it's worth the wait).
Also sometimes they don't have some fish depending on "what can be ordered from fish market" but it's a pretty rare occurrence and would only be something like Huss that's missing.
