After being let down & left high & dry by another company i got in touch with Neil at Hot Metal Works to see if he could help with the manufacture of a bespoke side gate required urgently. Business overview

We create beautiful bespoke objects to your individual requirements - call us today for a friendly chat on how we can help create your ideal metal masterpiece.

I came to the world of the Artistic Blacksmith relatively late in my working life, having worked in various fields including Micro film, Model Making and I.T. but I knew that there had to be more for me, something I really enjoyed and could excel at. I knew from my love of cars that I enjoyed

'...working with metal, changing its shape and creating'

and really admired the craftsmen that produce exquisite car bodies from flat sheets of metal with a few tools, but really didn’t want to make my hobby my job. Somehow, and I’m still not sure how, I found blacksmithing, specifically a three day beginners course, so I signed up, fell in love with the creative process, and have never looked back.

I have had some lucky breaks work wise, managing to find an employer in North East London that was willing to take on someone with virtually no ‘real world’ experience in blacksmithing and fabrication. I learned a lot here, mainly fabrication skills, and it was a sound building block for my development.

I really wanted to forge steel, bend and mould it into something new, and this role was no longer fulfilling me, so I started looking locally, and through a tattoo emporium in Guildford, I found a job working alongside a master blacksmith. Although I didn’t get many chances to work on the forge, I watched and listened and absorbed as much as I could. Again I learned many new skills, and started to

'...appreciate the true skill of a blacksmith.'

Another lucky break occurred a year or so later, and a company that I interviewed with at the same time as I did for the Guildford job, phoned me asking if I was interested in a blacksmith role? It was a big step for me, I would be the only and therefore main blacksmith in this company. Despite my lack of experience on the forge, I took the position, and didn’t look back. Suddenly all those techniques I’d been absorbing were being used, and I was

'...creating beautiful objects from cold hard steel.'

Arch over double gates
5
We wanted a metal arch between two wooden gateposts either side of double wooden garden gates, in the style of gate arches in the Bedford Park conservation area of Chiswick, with twists in the metal and a decorative spike in the middle. It was a slightly tricky job as one of the gateposts was warped and the fittings had to be chiselled into the woodwork to be flush with the surface. It also had to be exactly the right width to allow the gates to open and close properly. Neil understood exactly what we wanted and produced a beautiful arch that was perfect. We are rather exacting people to work for but Neil came and fitted the arch with the minimum of fuss, cleared up after and was an interesting and very pleasant man to deal with.

In good hands

Neil designed, made & fitted 2 sets of bi-folding security gates for the front & rear entrance on my canal boat. I wanted something attractive with a river feel. Neil made a gentle wave pattern. He actually made security grilles practical, attractive & cheerful. I have already had several favourable comments. Neil really is an artisan craftsman not 'just' a blacksmith. Good value for skilled work. Highly recommended by me.
