item broke - no refund

On the 8th of October 2011 we bought a mobile phone and charger. We were instructed to charge it for three hours. We got it home and plugged it in for three hours. After three hours the battery was not registering any additional charge. The stall at this point had closed so we could not take it back. We let the phone run down over the week but it would not charge. Then the following Saturday when we knew the stall would be open we took it back. The man on the stall examined the phone and charger and said it was the charger. He offered us a replacement. Due to the distance we live from bury and not wanting to pay for parking again we asked for a refund. The stall point black refused and said we had no right for a refund. I asked him for a receipt as we did not get one the week before. He gave us a receipt. I asked again for a refund as the item is faulty. He then wrote on our backdated receipt "14 days replacement warranty only".
