Evil with no eye on hygiene
1
Bit of a fav with students and vast amount of not that cheap booze. Food - don't go there - this is a big plus for public access to information collected by public officials - food hygiene inspection undertake by local authorities like York is public and one the web - search for 'scoresonthedoors'.
So the evil needs to put its eye on basic hygiene as it gets a big fat 0 out of 5 on this score - Yes thats a O - in what is described as 'about the standards of food hygiene and compliance with the law in food premises' ......well would you eat there?

A wickedness with cocktails

Evil Eye is a York institution for the self-proclaimed 'trendies' and students of York city. Which gives this place an interesting mix of clientels, but a really nice vibe. I've heard Evil described as 'York for the unpretentious goth' they got that half right, it is quite 'gothy', but somehow there's a level of pretentiousness too!
At times, before the smoking ban in the UK things used to get a little 'intensively' smokey and hazey, so much so that it was hard finding the bar amongst the oppressive fumes. Now things are a whole lot more breathable and bar easy to locate!
The decor is a low-lighted mix of bohemian Turkish 'brothelesque' - a strange mix of wood, 4 poster beds, thick curtains and a smattering of Moroccan boroqueness that somehow works - its eclectic to say the least!
By day this promotes itself as a beer shop with bar behind and internet cafe on the upper floor. By night the vibe changes as the dreadlocked, pierced, quirky and beautiful come together to toast from the extensive cocktail menu. Free pouring is the name of the game here, so you get a lot of potent juice for your money! Plus the staff are a quirky mix of the uber cool and uber good-looking so getting your drink mixed is entertainment in itself!
If your here on a Sunday there's something called the Evil Sunday Roast, 'evil' as portion wise its considerable and theyll be 'evil' reprocussions on your digestive system later if you finish it all! But value for money this is a hit! and the yorkshire puds are pretty good!
Otherwise the kitchens provide an interesting mix of Thai and tapas. In short the experience of this place is not for dinner and 'fine' dining, but do stay for the cocktails, you won't mind if you go hungry by the time you get through the drinks menu anyway!
