Business overview

Chair re-seating in cane, rush, willow and seagrass. Loose joints, repairs and woodworm sorted. Restore your cherished chairs and sofas to their former glory.

The Chair Repair Shop is a small company situated in The Salt Cellar Workshops, Salt Cellar Hill, Porthleven. We have been using traditional materials and methods to restore and re-cane seats, backs and arms of chairs and sofas since 1980. Originally set up in West Yorkshire the business moved to Cornwall in the early 1990's All our work is sympathetic to the original and carried out to the highest standard.

Although traditional re-caning is our primary business we are able to re-upholster seats where required and re-seat using natural rush, willow and seagrass. We also re-seat early 20th century Danish chairs. We also undertake repairs to framework and refinish.

The Chair Repair Shop has had some interesting and challenging requests over the years including repairing a willow pony saddle, re-stringing Victorian glass bead curtains, re-covering Victorian velvet picture frames and re-covering light aircraft seats.

We have a go at repairing or making anything - just ask

We have reciprocal links with Lee Bell at P&C Upholstery Ltd, Helston, telephone 01326 562552, who will give prices for larger upholstery projects .

This seemed a straightforward job to re-cane the sofa and replace the seat cover but as is often the case the hessian had rotted away beneath the fabric
When the old hessian was removed the original horsehair was good enough to save to reuse but under that it was evident the springs needed to be re-tied.
Before restringing the springs the dust was removed to expose webbing which was in good condition and didn't need to be replaced
After the springs are re-tied a layer of fine hessian is put on using traditonal upholsery tacks
The next step is to replace the horsehair and add another layer of hessian. Another layer of horsehair will be added and followed by a layer of soft kapok before the final fabric is added.
The owner of this chair only wanted the back re-caned. They had the arms and seat re-upholstered by P&C Upholstery Ltd
It took a while to work out the position of the canes as all I had to work from was the little pice at the back.

Natural bull rush is used for this chair. It is hand twisted as the work progresses.
