Carp & Trout Fish & Chip Shop

Fantastic fish and chips, and lovely friendly staff. Travelled miles from home to pick something up from Kingston so looked for something to eat when I was back at Hampton Court Station. Cannot recommend highly enough. If only someone served fish and chips like this back home. Nice cripsy, dry chips, not fat swamped mush and the cod was golden and white. THANKS !!

Me again.

Having raved about the quality fo food and service, my wife agreed to travel from Reading to Hampton Court to give this a try.

Not criticising my wife, but she has a tendency to “correct” me whenever the opportunity presents, so in truth I was expecting (at best) a half-hearted acknowledgement that the food was good.

To my complete surprise (and joy), my wife agrees with my view to the extent that (in her words) “this has spoilt me for fish and chips” and she now feels she’ll only eat from Carp and Trout at Hampton Court, despite there being several “decent” chippies within a mile of where we live, in Reading.

I cannot recommend this place enough as it’s passed “the Mrs’s” test.

Just to set the scene, I'm 60 years old and have eaten a lot of fish and chips. I'm also a fisherman and have eaten fish within hours of being caught. As such, I am quite demanding of what I buy. This is the first time I've been moved to write a review and I am doing so firstly because I have just enjoyed the best fish and chips I've ever eaten, including those I've cooked for myself.

The fish was in the lightest of batters that was perfectly seasoned, enhancing, not drowning, the flavor of the fish. Not a hint of grease, fat or oil.

I asked for the chips to be double cooked as I like them really crisp. Not a problem for the cook, who did exactly as I asked without comment or extra charge.

Great service, good price and fantastic value for money, especially if you value the flavor of your food.

Fairly poor quality food. Pies reasonable quality bought in 'Pukka' brand, but ruined by being microwaved. Battered Sausage poor quality/too salty & often dry - probably by being reheated? Chips variable, sometimes ok/sometimes stale, but never good. Fish is usually good, but last one I had here this week (April 2019) was tasteless (indicating not fresh but inferior frozen stock). Decor looking old & tired, shop needs a repaint & redecoration. There's an increasing shabbiness about the place, wall menu tacked up with bits of paper covering out of date prices, staff not wearing service whites, but jeans/casual clothes & altho polite, looking like they'd rather not be there. Behind the counter looks a bit grubby through lack of cleaning, & the floor both in the dining area & particularly behind the counter looks dirty. Prices have substantially increased too, so a large cod & chips is now £10 take-out. Increasing prices & lowering quality doesn't bode well for this shop's prospects
