Carlisle Mencap

Carlisle MENCAP has been serving people with learning disabilities and their families for over 50 years. Local people with disabled children set up the charity in 1968. Today we have over 200 members and provide services for over 300 people with learning disabilities and their families in North Cumbria.

We are a local charity our board of trustees are all local people most of whom either have learning disabilities or are family members. Our services include residential respite care for adults at California House, children’s home based respite, community support, young people’s clubs, young people’s holidays, family support workers for young people with autism, holidays, leisure activities and befriending.

A major focus at the moment is the Grace Little Centre for disabled children

helps families with profoundly disabled young people is to provide short breaks away from the family home for the young person.
