Business overview

Wood turning to me is not just a job, or part of a profession, ITS A PASSION..

The business Campbell Fowler was set up in 1997 by myself Chris Fowler to manufacture quality bespoke hand crafted furniture, via commission from members of the public and local companies. The furniture being made from solid timbers.

Being a self-taught wood turner, starting at the age of 15 when I brought an old cast iron Hobbiy's treadle flat belt drive wood lathe, a bit like a pole lathe but slightly more modern, brought for 30 shillings (that's £1.50 for those of you not old enough to remember real money). I’m also a self-taught wood carver from the age of 20, my first carving being of a John Fowler & Co traction engine smoke box door.

I can still read a blue print or engineers drawing, a tape measure, imperial micrometers & verniers, but now I get more enjoyment as every day brings something different.

Exceptional skills, resourceful and very wide knowledge

Over the years, Chris has worked many times for me, many of my friends and churches. He will undertake everything in wood from felling a tree to cutting it, making blanks and turning the wood. I have many of his "compositions" made out of the wood from trees which once were in my gardens.

He is also a very good teacher of his skills. When I have the opportunity, I like to work with him. I am sure we have the same kind of humour.

He has French polished my wife's grandad piano after filling various knocks where it had been damaged over the years. The piano is now looking better than we have ever seen it before. Well done.

I have seen him make special cabinets, from antique reproductions to kitchen units or fitting new worktops ... It is always satisfying to watch a man who knows his trade at work.

Chris is always ready for a challenge. You will not be disappointed.
