We first opened as La Cafetiere, a small but bustling family run coffee shop, in the busy Bruntsfield shopping area in 1984.
Following expansion in 1997 and a change of name to Café Grande, we now regard ourself as a Café/Bar/Restaurant open all hours and suiting all walks of life. Flexibility is valued here, whether it's a quick cappuccino, glass of wine or hearty breakfast you need, you'll find our friendly staff and cosy atmosphere very welcoming, especially over the summer period when, weather permitting, sitting outside is an added bonus.
However, you'll be pleasantly suprised by the transformation at night. With candle lit tables, Café Grande becomes a simple but very pleasant Bistro. Our small dinner menu uses local produce and fresh ingredients and changes every four to six weeks, with blackboard specials changing daily. Dishes are available as small or large portions and our children's menu is also available in the evening.

great food and staff5
Dinner at Cafe Grande5
The food was well presented and tasted great, freshly made and good sized portions.
We loved the large choice of desserts and both went for a gluten free cheesecake which was gorgeous.
The cafe had a cosy, homely feel and felt like a welcome sanctuary after a busy day and being out in the cold.
Excellent and friendly service5
The Other Place4
The friends I was with tried to take me here but it was simply too popular (noon on a Sat) and so we erroneously went directly over the road.
However, I asked them how many stars they would give this place if they were reviewing it and they agreed it was a 4 star breakfast place. Well, there you go...I hope to be able to review it first hand but wanted to help someone avoid the mistake I made.
A tip though...get there early or just hang out and wait!
Small, friendly, good food4
The food is bistro style. I had seafood bisque, which was fantastic, then grilled swordfish on a bean cassuolet. The fish was tasty and perfectly cooked, but the cassuolet was disappointing. It more resembled a tinned bean salad than a cassuolet. However, my companions' dishes were all wonderful.
Prices are reasonable too. We each had a glass of house wine, one white, one red and one rose. All were pretty rough, so we'll have to move up the wine list next time!
