Business overview

Birch Airfield Composting Services recycle garden, park and vegetable wastes, collected by local Councils and businesses, to produce compost products for supply to businesses.

The business is owned and run by the Strathern Family whom have been farming in the locality for over half a century. They have been operating the BACS business from the old RAF Birch site near to Colchester in Essex since they set it up in 2002. The BACS site operates under an Environment Agency Permit and is able to accept and recycle a number of organic waste materials. Wastes the site can receive include grass clippings, garden prunings, vegetables and fruit (not from the kitchen), woodchips and oversize from other composting sites. No noxious weeds are permitted.

The organic wastes that BACS receive are then subjected to a rigorous composting process that uses naturally occurring micro-bacteria to manufacture a number of quality assured products. To ensure that these products are fit for purpose BACS have implemented a strict quality management system that conforms to both BSI PAS100 (2018) and the Compost Quality Protocol (CQP).

Compost products are manufactured for use by garden nurseries, gardeners, landscapers and by local farmers to restore soil organic matter.

- 0-20mm compost for agricultural use.
