Overpriced and Underfed
1
After a long day walking around the countryside in Dorset on a Sunday evening, my mother and I were searching for a reasonably priced meal in a friendly atmosphere but had had enough of pub food so decided to go one step up to a brasserie. However, based on this experience I will now be sticking to pubs for the foreseeable future.
We walked into the reception and asked whether the two of us could eat and were told there would be a bit of a wait but we were happy to go ahead and sit down (as we assumed the “wait” would not be longer than about 30 minutes). However, we were not even asked what we wanted to drink for 15 minutes. When we finally received our drinks, our order was not taken for another half an hour despite there only be two other tables in use in the brasserie.
The menu was actually quite impressive for a brasserie but perhaps too much like a restaurant. None of the meals (eg fish) were served with veg or salad – these had to be ordered separately. This is very unusual for a brasserie. But even then, the range of side dishes was awful – I couldn’t order a mix of veg or a side salad, but merely “rocket” or “mozzarella and tomato”.
We both waited another 20 mins for our meal (ie 1 hr 15 mins total from when we arrived) and when the food arrived there was further disappointment to come – my fillet of salmon was absolutely tiny…it was as if tit had been cut it in half before it had been put on the plate. Furthermore, my mother did not receive what she had ordered - she had ordered Jamie’s 6oz steak burger but was given a Minute Steak, which, in her words was “as tough as old boots”.
The other two tables in the brasserie were also less than impressed – I was aware of this as there was no music and so the conversations from every table could be heard by the other.
The only positive aspect of this experience was the fresh bread which was served and the lovely décor. The owners had obviously spent way too much money on decorating at the expense of hiring proper chefs and waitresses/waiters. There is clearly a shortage of staff which needs addressing.
I will never return to this brasserie and would not recommend it to anyone.
