Really poor

1
My young family and I, (a two year old, a 3 week old newborn, and my wife), visited Ask Italian Durham on Father's Day as a treat for us all to enjoy some authentic Italian cuisine. The restaurant seemed quieter than Nando's, Chiquito's, or Wetherspoons for Fathers Day, and as our family like a bit of piece and quiet, we thought this would be the ideal place to have some lunch.

How wrong we were.

After being greeted and shown to our seats by a very pleasant member of staff, who replaced one of the seats for a high chair, we read the menus, ordered some drinks and then began to decide on one, two or three courses. After our drinks arrived, we decided on three courses, and perhaps cheekily, added some olives and garlic bread into the mix. 10-15 minutes later, and our first courses arrived - a wonderfully presented insalata caprese, a very colourful bruschetta, and a child's starter, consisting of carrot sticks, cucumber and some garlic bread fingers. After around 10-15 minutes of some lovely conversation, peppered with some delicious food, we finished our starters and waited for our mains.

10 minutes later...20 minutes on...30 minutes further...40 minutes…50 minutes - I'm guessing that you can understand the picture. Have you ever tried to entertain a newborn and two year old in a seated position, in a restaurant chain for nearly an hour, while waiting for 1 pizza, 1 salad and a child's portion of spaghetti? I knew of Ask's insistence on authenticity, but Jesus... Does Ask Durham actually travel to Italy to pick up the rocket and tomatoes per order???

I have never not paid for a meal in any capacity, and refuse to chase up meals as surely that would be the servers job to provide customer with a service of providing the meals your patrons actually order?

Seeing other customers who had come in AFTER me and my family, ordering for their tables - all ordering HOT meals, and getting their meals before my ours. I'm sat there waiting on a blinking salad... A SALAD. For nearly an hour. SERIOUSLY!?!?!?

The restaurant wasn't particularly busy, and I can understand why. The Durham public must be more informed than I was and I shan't make the same mistake again.

I can see now why you've been voted the 148th best restaurant in Durham (out of 251 according to tripadvisor).

I asked the young female server for the bill, and she duly provided me with it. £53, and we hadn't even HAD OUR MAINS. She apologised and said they were on the way out. I asked her to cancel the order, and she duly obliged. She then came back with a bill for £20.17 and after further co paint she said she could reduce this further by 20%. So infuriated with this I said I wasn't going to pay for anything. She went to the till to speak with the manager, and I packed my family up, ready to leave.

As way of courtesy, I decided to speak for myself and approached the manager (at least I think it was, I don't recall seeing a name badge) and told him I was so disappointed with the level of service that I wanted a customer complaint form and stated I wouldn't pay for any of the meal, so poor was the experience. Empathy is something you could teach those guys. I don't intend to ever visit that restaurant again, and it's a shame as the ASK in the Sheffield, York and Cardiff are all fantastic.

I can't lay all the blame for the meal at your door however. Perhaps I should have researched more thoroughly…a quick look on tripadvisor, and I will see that this restaurant has 5 terrible experiences against its name this year (I shall be the sixth), and 5 poor experiences. And that's just the people who have had time to review it. I'm pretty sure if you had more people reviewing it, ASK Durham wou

Quick Lunch

I popped in for a quick spot of lunch, the food was adequate and the service good. It was a tad noisy with all the other people milling about....... but for a quick lunch it was reasonably priced despite the wine being a little on the expensive side.

Ask - Walkergate

4
Ask is really an upmarket chain of Italian restaurants. In my opinion it delivers this really well. The restaurant itself has a very smart interior and the toilets are good. The menu is predominately pizza and pasta, but there are also salads and meat dishes, however, whatever you choose, it is guaranteed to be high quality. The staff are always helpful and polite, and managed to accommodate 9 of us on one occasion despite having no record of our reservation (we had changed the reservation time and everything had got mixed up).
Ask is not a budget restaurant having a fairly expensive menu for an Italian. It is, however, a lovely place to go for a meal, and as a result, I do not begrudge the higher prices, as a feel the high quality of both the restaurant itself and the food undoubtedly makes up for it.

Ask some more?

Ask restaurant is in the Walkergate section of Durham close to the Gala theatre and surrounded by other restaurants meaning that it has to really try hard to pull people in. It is a chain restaurant and so you really know what you’re getting here. They serve good Italian food at a relatively reasonable price.

The restaurant itself seems upmarket with good service, clean toilets and a well set-out dining area meaning that you don’t feel cramped or crowded even when there are lots of people around. It does, however, seem to be lacking in character somewhat and the price range makes it only a rare treat for any students.
