Business overview

With lion populations estimated to have declined 43% in the past 21 years, and with fewer than 20,000 lions left in Africa, ALERT is dedicated to protecting this iconic species

AFRICA NEEDS LIONS

Unless the people of Africa want to conserve lions, by benefitting from their presence, the species will continue to decline until they are all gone. This principle is at the core of ALERT’s approach to conservation. As such, we work to directly address the variety of needs of local communities through education and social development programmes.

Neither humans, nor lions, can survive in isolation; both are reliant on functional ecosystems. ALERT seeks to engage in activities that conserve all of Africa’s wild species, and the ecosystems within which they live, and on which communities rely.

As a registered UK charity, ALERT relies on donations from individuals and corporations to continue our work. We also welcome paying volunteers, interns, and guests to our project sites in Zambia and Zimbabwe to help finance our programmes: http://lionalert.org/page/internships
