How to keep working from home while moving house
Organisation and preparation are essential to any home move, doubly so when you work from home and need to minimise professional downtime. If you make sure you have done everything on the list below, the process of moving without disrupting your work life should be much simpler. But first and foremost, keep in regular contact with your agent and conveyancing solicitor.
Move Date
Know when the move will happen as early as possible then inform suppliers and customers and, arrange with phone, internet and electricity suppliers to get their cables etc installed in advance of that date. Try and set the move for a Friday or Saturday so you have the weekend to set everything up again. Your conveyancer will be able to tell you when yo are near to completion.
Holidays
If you are not self-employed, book a week’s holiday to coincide with the move. You will be able to sort most of the unpacking without the stress of needing to be at your desk.
Telephones
Make sure everyone who needs it has your mobile number as phone lines often prove the most complicated to have installed. If you cannot take your new number with you, find out what the new one is well in advance and make sure people are aware of it and when the changeover is happening.
Forward your mail
You may have planned it like a military operation but there is bound to be someone who sends important letters to your old address, investing in a six-month redirection service is money well spent.
Don’t give the essentials to the removal men
Make sure your laptop or desktop, printer, phone and essential paperwork travels with you to your new home. That way you will not have to pack up your business essentials until the last minute and search through boxes for hours to find them again.
Plan your new office
The combination of working from home and moving house is undoubtedly stressful but there is one positive. A new office is a blank canvas which you can plan to match your exact requirements. If you invest some time in how your new office will look and where things will go, you will reap the benefits once the move is complete.
You should also consider using an online conveyancer, where you will be able to check how the sale is progressing at the click of a button.
