A few weeks ago I wrote a blog post about how busy autumn is for plumbers and heating engineers and what members of the public should be doing to make sure their houses can cope with the seasonal changes.

This week, I’d like to focus on winter which is also a very busy time for us.

The possibility of snow and the promise of sub-zero temperatures is enough to get anyone running for the kettle or the bath tub but if you don’t look after your plumbing and heating systems things won’t be so cosy!

There’s also a strong chance of rain (well, this is Britain after all) and late autumn and early winter provide plenty of leaves to fall and clog gutters and drains.

With this in mind here are some recommendations.

  • Check your gutters and drains to make sure they’re clear.  This will help prevent flooding in case of heavy rainfall.
  • Check that you have pipe lagging in place to protect them against freezing temperatures which can cause fractured pipes. For cisterns and pipes in the loft leave the access slightly open to allow warm air into the roof space.
  • Speak to your registered plumbing and heating professional about a frost protection thermostat. They are easy to fit and could save a fortune in damage when you go on winter vacations.
  • Avoid CO poisoning!  If you use oil, coal or gas appliances to heat your home get them maintained every year and get a CO alarm to warn you of malfunctions.
  • If anything does go wrong with your heating or plumbing systems, call a Registered Plumber or Heating Professional! You can find them on the link to the register on the CIPHE website or by calling 01708 472791.
