In August I was asked to present a speech at the 13th conference for the Indian Plumbing Association. I also received an Honorary Fellowship in recognition of my commitment towards fulfilling the social responsibilities we face as plumbing and heating professionals.

I flew to Hyderabad to receive the honour from IPA president Sudhakaran Nair – an executive board member of the World Plumbing Council like me and a man who shares many of my concerns as an International figurehead for the profession. It was a highlight of my career and I was delighted to have the chance to address over 800 plumbers too.

My speech focussed on the global water shortage and the vital role plumbers have in driving consumer change. I asked the audience to imagine the planet’s water supply was contained in a 1 litre bottle. Then I filled the cap to show how much of that water was usable.

I also mentioned that every year, approximately 3.5 million people die from contaminated water, mostly children in developing countries. The statistics are frightening!

I can see so many ways to help the world cope with water shortages and improve the lives of millions. In fact, we can save lives!

That’s because plumbing and heating professionals can help conserve water and ensure it’s safe to use by refurbishing existing plumbing systems and building new ones.

In India, it’s currently easier to access the internet than find clean water and more televisions are sold than toilets but this situation can improve with the support of the Indian Plumbing Association. Recent news stories have appeared about British plumbing and heating professionals travelling abroad to help, volunteering their time and skills in poorer countries.  What a fabulous contribution to make!

Professional design and installation of water and sanitation systems are essential to life.
