While the proposed strike by British Airways cabin crew will not now occur over Christmas and New Year, the prospect of a strike early in the New Year remains. If you have made travel arrangements with BA, check with your travel insurer on the extent of any cover available should future industrial action disrupt your plans. Whilst it is the responsibility of the airline to arrange alternative flights or to reimburse you, some travel insurance policies will cover for delay and abandonment due to industrial action. However, the policy must have been purchased before there was any hint of a strike. Most of our members have agreed that policies must have been taken out before December 14th when the intention to strike was announced.
Should you need to make alternative travel arrangements due to strikes, you can usually simply transfer your insurance to cover your new plans. Of course, your travel insurer must be informed of any changes you make to your trip. Some travel policies will provide cover for delays and abandonment due to industrial action.
Consumers likely to be affected need to check their insurance policies. It is the responsibility of British Airways to ensure their customers aren’t out of pocket, but some travel policies can help minimise consumer inconvenience.
