The role holder will be responsible for undertaking analysis, design and development tasks for the creation and enhancement of new media products in line with departmental quality standards.


Responsibilities:

  • Analyse, design and document new products and/or enhancements to agreed specifications and standards;
  • Create and amend programs in accordance with the design to meet the Statement of Requirements (SOR);
  • Create and action test plans to ensure programs are error free;
  • Conduct and participate in reviews of own and others work to ensure the sharing of technical best practice;
  • Provide guidance and assistance to colleagues on program design, creation, testing and documentation to support best practice of the team;
  • Evaluate and review program methods, tools and standards to promote best practice;
  • Liase with other external and internal teams, e.g. Design team and Systems, to ensure awareness of product enabling compatibility and co-ordination of effort;
  • Take responsibility for self-development for the achievement of personal and departmental objectives.


Required skills:

  • In-depth understanding of the software development life cycle and of web application development;
  • Use and knowledge of Java and of servlet- or struts-based development;
  • Experience with JDBC and relational databases required—Oracle experience is advantageous;
  • Use and knowledge of one or more of the following is required: Unix, XML, UML;
  • While not a requirement, applicants with development experience in the areas of search engines and information retrieval will be at a particular advantage;
  • EJB development experience is advantageous, as is experience with one or more of the following platforms: Apache, the Resin application server, JBoss
  • Experience with open source libraries and frameworks, e.g. lucene, hibernate or others from the Apache Software Foundation is a plus.
