An Alexander technique teacher can guide you into greater understanding of yourself

Glyn<br /> WilliamsIt is somewhat difficult to explain what the Alexander Technique is in a few words, but it could be said that it is “a form of psychophysical re-education, where you retrain the mind and body in a more appropriate use of the self”.

F M Alexander was a one-man, Shakespearian actor from Australia who developed vocal problems at an early age. Doctors weren’t able to help him, at that time, so he set out to find a solution to his condition for himself. He eventually succeeded and in the process found out how the mechanics of the body work. He began a training course to teach others how to use their hands to encourage the release of tension in other people’s bodies, thereby improving their posture and alignment and consequently the way they move.

The technique gained popularity to such a degree that there are now training courses all over the world where interested people can attend a 3 year course to become qualified teachers. Over twenty years ago the general public were not too sure if this technique should be classed as a therapy or not, but the Alexander community at that time were insistent that it was a form of re-education.

The technique has been used successfully in all walks of life to help people improve their capacity in whatever endeavour they are pursuing. The most striking benefits have been observed with people recovering from injury as well as helping older people who have difficulty walking and moving. Sports people have used the technique to improve their performance; musicians are very respectful of the technique and all the major Music Conservatoires in London now teach this technique for interested students.

Why should you consider the Alexander Technique? Many people have lessons because they are in pain or discomfort, whilst others who use their bodies for a living may feel that they are not performing at their best. Others may be sent by doctors to help in recovering from injury and some are just curious as to its potential and therefore interested in learning more about it.

I have had students improve from conditions such as RSI, spinal problems, headaches due to tension, walking difficulties; musicians who have benefitted from the technique and can play better as a result of not having breathing problems; singers who can sing better due to lack of tension. I once had a letter from the wife of a student saying that their relationship had improved. One student even commented that his motorbike went round corners better!

You cannot predict exactly what effect the Alexander Technique can have on you, as it is a progressive journey into the unknown, but those people who have used it in the past have favourable evidence of its efficacy. As Alexander said – use affects functioning.

How you use yourself affects how efficiently you function. So if you are interested in learning more about your capacity, contact the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique to find a teacher who can then guide you into greater understanding of yourself.
