Things you didn't know about... the Isle of Lewis

It's the northern part of an island that has no name. The southern part is known as the Isle of Harris. More poetically, Gaelic names for it translate as "the Long Island" and also "the Heather Isle". The "island with no name" is the largest island in the British Isles after Great Britain and Ireland, with a landmass of 859 square miles.

The Isle of Lewis produces one of the most esoteric foods to be found anywhere in the UK. We're talking guga, the salt-preserved carcasses of fledgling gannets. Described as being "like meat that's better than fish, and fish that's better than meat" by Gordon Ramsay. It's probably fair to say that it's an acquired taste.

The precise spot, according to Guinness World Records, is the Butt of Lewis, the island's northernmost point. As the Isle of Lewis is mostly low-lying and is exposed to the full force of the prevailing westerly winds, there are plans for a massive wind farm with more than 200 turbines.

Religious observance is high on the Isle of Lewis. Locals were enraged a few years ago when British Airways launched a Sunday flight to the island, and most shops and pubs close on Sundays, though this is gradually changing.

Super-rich star of the original US series of The Apprentice, Donald Trump, can be claimed as a son of the Isle of Lewis. His mother, Mary Anne MacLeod Trump, was born in the village of Tong.

One of the UK's greatest archaeological finds was made on the Isle of Lewis when a collection of Viking chess pieces was found on Uig Beach in 1830. They appeared in the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Confusingly, Harris Tweed is mostly produced on the Isle of Lewis rather than Harris, and the trade itself is based around the main town, Stornoway.

The Isle of Lewis has a rich local folklore, including stories of a family of werewolves on an island in Loch Langavat, and "glowing balls" to be seen in the skies around Sandwick.
