Following the example of the islanders of Eigg, islanders in 2000 raised the money from donations and a £1 million loan. New businesses were started to settle this debt, and the loan was repaid within two years. The Isle of Gigha celebrates this feat every year with a Payback Day in March.

This tiny island off the Isle of Gigha is still in the hands of the MacDonald clan, and is all that remains of that ancient Lordship. The current holder of the title "Lord of the Isles" is Prince Charles.
