Dyfed
Dyfed is home to the smallest city in the UK
St David's has a population of fewer than 2,000 people, making it the smallest city in the United Kingdom. It is also the birthplace of St David, the patron saint of Wales.
Is there anybody out there?
An unusually large number of people in Dyfed claim to have seen UFOs. The incidents have collectively become known as the Dyfed Enigma, with some calling the area the Welsh Triangle. Among the strange occurrences, in February 1977 schoolchildren in Broad Haven said they saw silver-suited spaceman coming out of a spaceship.
Dyfed put the Stone in Stonehenge
The huge bluestones that make up Stonehenge are the same stone as that found in the Preseli Mountains in Dyfed. It is thought that more than 80 stones, weighing up to five tonnes each, were transported from Dyfed to Salisbury by human effort.
Dyfed feels the need for speed
Pendine Sands, on the coast of Dyfed, was used for several land speed record attempts in the 1920s. The seven miles of firm sand created a track that was superior to many roads at the time. The record went up from 235 km/h (146 mph) to 280 km/h (174 mph) over the course of four separate attempts between 1924 and 1927.
Dyfed coasts effortlessly into guide books
Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is the only national park in the UK to be so designated because of the beauty and value of its coastline.
Local knowledge will help you avoid a beating in Dyfed
Laugharne Corporation is the only remaining medieval corporation in the UK. It has some administrative responsibilities in the Dyfed town of Laugharne, but is perhaps best known for the tradition of the "Common Walk".
Every three years, hundreds of people take part in the 40 km (25 mi) walk past places of historical importance in the area. At various "hoisting points" someone is picked at random to name the landmark. If they are unable to do so, they are ceremoniously hoisted upside down and beaten three times!
Dyfed—go on, my sun
The sunniest place in Wales is the Dale Peninsula, in the south-west corner of Dyfed. Around 1,800 hours of sunshine are recorded each year. Don't throw away your coat though—it's also the windiest place in Wales.
