Storage

What is self-storage?
Self-storage involves a purpose-built steel room or unit inside a warehouse where you can store your goods securely.

Can I store anything I want?
Storage space comes in all shapes and sizes, from large rooms to wardrobe-sized spaces. So you can store as much or as little as you want. The larger the storage area, the more you pay.

You can store anything legal so long as it's not alive, perishable or inflammable.

Are the storage areas secure?
You can use your own padlock and key to lock your unit. The storage areas should be monitored with CCTV and staff 24 hours a day and the storage rooms should also have their own alarm, plus there should be adequate fire detection systems.

Will I have access to my things when I want?
You should be able to get into your storage unit as often as you like during the day, seven days a week, and by arrangement at times out of normal hours.

If you're likely to want access to particular items, make sure you store them last so that they are in the most accessible position in your storage unit.

What about insurance?
You will need insurance. Some storage companies offer insurance as part of their service, or you can take out your own cover. You may be able to include it in your household insurance if it's for a short time, so it's worth asking. If not, then there are specialist insurers who sell storage cover.

When buying insurance, make sure you value your goods correctly. If you have special high-value items such as works of art or antiques, then you should have them valued by an expert before taking out cover.

If you're storing your complete house contents then you may want to insure for the same sum as covered by your household insurance policy.

What do I need to pack my things?
You'll need to protect your things while in storage by packing them in suitable boxes. Storage companies supply all kinds of boxes designed to store specific items, such as papers and books, clothes and so on.

Some items may need added protection in storage. Delicate items, including electrical goods, should be packed in bubble wrap while corrugated card can be used to protect furniture legs and corners, and acid-free tissue can be used for glassware and crockery. The storage company will supply a wide range of packing and protective materials.
