- Ask the plumber if they are a member of the Institute of Plumbing (IoP).
- Ask if the plumber's work and any new parts are guaranteed.
- Ask for references from previous customers who have had similar jobs done, and follow them up.
- Make sure that all charges are included on a quote, such as call-out charges, the plumber's hourly rate of pay, and the cost of parts and equipment.
- Get a written contract from the plumber before the work commences.
- Keep the number of a good emergency plumber in a safe place, just in case you ever need it.
- For work on gas central heating systems or gas boiler repairs, use a CORGI-registered plumber or central heating engineer (From 1 April 2009 in England, Scotland and Wales, Gas Safe Register replaces CORGI).
