Opticians' services include:
- Eye tests, in which the optician examines your eyes for medical problems, tests your eyesight and gives you the relevant prescription;
- Contact lenses and contact lens eye care programmes, which usually include regular check-ups and replacement lenses for a set monthly fee;
- Help with choosing your spectacles, and advice on frames and different types of lense coatings for your glasses;
- Making up your glasses;
- Eyewear for the sun, including prescription sunglasses and designer frames;
- Provision of bifocals and varifocals;
- Adjusting your frames and carrying out repairs.
- You do not have to register with an optician, unlike a doctor or dentist.
- Even if you do not think you need to wear glasses, your eye care is important and you should have regular eye tests.
- If you do need glasses or contact lenses, your optician will give you a prescription that lasts for six months.
- You can get glasses made up by any optician as long as you give them a recent prescription.
- You will need to visit your optician regularly, so choose one close to where you live or work.
- Under-16s and under-19s in full time education get free eye tests, as well as some people on a low income or claiming benefits.
- When you are choosing new glasses, take a trusted friend with you to give you a second opinion on whether they suit you.
- Many opticians offer special offers from time to time, such as two pairs of glasses for the price of one, free prescription sunglasses when you buy a pair of glasses, or special lens coatings for free.
