Acrylics: a liquid- and powder-based enhancement product that nail technicians use to shape and bond nail extensions.

Airbrushing: the process of using an air-powered gun to spray polish over stencils to create "nail art". This service is not always offered by nail technicians.

American manicure: a softer and more natural-looking version of the French manicure.

Cuticle oil: a nourishing product designed to re-hydrate the nail cuticle and keep it healthy and flexible.

Dangles: rings and jewels that are inserted into a hole that has been pierced into the tip of the nail extension.

Decals: small stickers that are applied to the nail as part of the manicure.

Fibreglass wraps: a synthetic mesh with a loose weave applied over the nail to make it stronger and/or repair damage.

French manicure: a nail polish technique that creates "tips" with white polish and then covers the bed of the nail with a natural-looking pink or beige colour.

Gels (UV gel): a pre-mixed acrylic-based enhancement product that is used to shape and bond nail extensions.

Infills: nail technicians need to "fill in" the area of re-growth that develops after the application of nail enhancements.

Jewels/gems: small rhinestone accessories that can be attached to a nail as part of the manicure.

Manicure: a beauty treatment offered by nail technicians for the fingernails and hands. Usually includes filing, shaping and application of polish.

Mobile nail technician: someone who goes out to customers rather than being based in a salon.

Nail extensions/enhancements: the application of artificial tips that are fixed to the nail by various methods.

Orange sticks: soft wooden sticks used frequently by nail technicians to remove cuticle and dirt from nails without damaging them.

Overlays: another word nail technicians use for "wraps".

Pedicure: a beauty treatment offered by nail technicians for the feet and nails of the foot. Usually includes soaking, moisturising, filing and application of polish.

Sculpted gel nail extensions: gel that is sculpted onto your natural nails to extend them without the need for extension tips.

Shape and polish: a basic manicure offered by some nail technicians that involves filing, cleaning and polishing the nails.

Silk wraps: a fine synthetic mesh applied over the nail to make it stronger and/or repair damage.

Thermal mittens/booties: heated mittens or booties are used by some nail technicians for advanced soothing and nourishing.

Tips:

  • Nail technicians often have their own specialities.
  • Ask your nail technician whether they are a member of The Guild of Nail Technicians.
  • Nail technicians do not always offer "nail art" services and vice versa. Always ask beforehand to avoid disappointment.
