- 3G: so-called third-generation technology for mobile phones that allows video calling and fast internet access.
- band: if your mobile phone has more than one frequency or band then it will let you receive a signal abroad and give you improved coverage at home.
- Bluetooth: a wireless technology that lets you use your mobile phone with other compatible devices (such as your laptop and other phones) via a headset that gives you hands-free facilities in the car without getting tangled in wires.
- EMS: Enhanced Messaging Service. Like SMS, but with graphics and standard ring tones
- GPRS: General Packet Radio Services. A wireless data transmission service whereby you pay for the data sent rather than the connection time.
- GSM: Global System for Mobile Communications. This is the most popular operating standard for mobile phones across the world, using three frequency bands.
- Handset: this just means the actual phone!
- Java: technology that lets you download and store games on your mobile phone.
- Megapixels: the term used to describe the number of units of image-sensing capacity in a camera. The more megapixels, the better the quality of the images on your mobile phone's camera.
- MMS: Multi Media Service. Also known as picture messaging, this facility lets you send and receive images or sound on your mobile phone.
- MP3: this technology lets you store CD-quality music downloaded from the internet to play back or use as a ring tone on your mobile phone.
- Polyphonic ring tones: these offer better quality tones than standard ring tones, due to the multi-layered sound.
- SAR level: Specific Absorption Rate level. This refers to the small amount of radiation absorbed by your body while you're on your mobile phone. The maximum limit in the UK is 2.0W/Kg.
- SIM card: Subscriber Identity Module. This is the little card in your phone that holds all the information about your mobile phone such as the number, contact lists, your account etc.
- SMS: Short Message Service, commonly known as text messaging. A feature which lets you send and receive short messages between mobile phones.
- USB: Universal Serial Bus. This facility on your mobile phone will allow you to connect your handset to your computer.
- WAP: Wireless Application Protocol. This technology lets you access text-based information from the web in a format that is easily read on a mobile phone screen.
