Lawnmowers and garden equipmentLawnmowers tend to be the most common product purchased by your average gardener, so when purchasing your lawnmower you may wish to consider the following advice:
- Consider what type of work the lawnmower will have to do;
- There are two main types of lawnmower available on the market; rotary and cylinder. There are others, such as flails, but these are confined to heavy duty work;
- Rotary lawnmowers are simple and very versatile and will suffice for your average garden;
- When purchasing a rotary lawnmower ask about the "tip speed" (the speed the tip of the blade rotates in relation to the ground speed of the lawnmower), the higher the tip speed the better the quality of finish on your lawn;
- Cylinder lawnmowers are ideal for the kind of high quality finish you would find on a bowling or golf green;
- Cylinder lawnmowers, however, are more complicated to use and need to be properly set up before mowing, so ask the salesperson about this.
When using lawnmowers always remember to:
- Read the user manual to maximise the use and maintenance of your lawnmower;
- Use the correct fuel;
- Remove any solid objects from the cutting area;
- Clean the grass from your lawnmower after you have finished as grass sap is extremely corrosive;
- Change the oil.
